Colin Farrell Doesn’t Know If He Would Return for Potential ‘Penguin’ Season 2: “I F***ing Wanted It to Be Finished”

As a die-hard fan of Colin Farrell’s acting prowess, I can’t help but admire his honesty and candor when it comes to his roles. His portrayal of the Penguin in the upcoming HBO series is no exception. While I, like many others, am eagerly anticipating this gritty adaptation, I find myself empathizing with Colin’s sentiments about the intensity of the role.

Although Colin Farrell feels appreciative for the opportunity to portray the Penguin in the forthcoming HBO series bearing the same title, he’s uncertain about the prospect of donning that costume and that distinctive headgear once more.

In his latest chat with Total Film magazine, the actor openly discussed the demanding nature of the role he played. When asked about potentially reprising it for a second season of The Penguin should it be renewed, he expressed uncertainty, saying, “I’m not sure, buddy.

Farrell clarified that he enjoyed it immensely, but admitted it left him feeling somewhat overwhelmed. Towards the end, he found himself complaining to anyone who would listen about his eagerness for it to be over. He attempted to remind them that he felt both grumpy and grateful. He explained that he was still appreciative and honored, as growing up he had idolized Burgess Meredith, who played the villain in the 1960s series, and Danny DeVito, who portrayed the Penguin in Tim Burton’s 1992 Batman Returns. Thus, being part of this story’s legacy made him feel particularly privileged.

Eventually, “at the conclusion,” the actor felt prepared to finish up with the combination of the prosthetics, costume, and mental state he had entered.

Farrell explained that he wasn’t just mindlessly causing chaos like setting cars on fire, but rather, the overall creation by Matt Reeves, Lauren LeFranc, and Mike Marino combined was an incredibly impactful experience for him.

The actor mentioned, “Lauren asked, ‘If there was a feasible approach, would you discuss it?’ To which I replied positively. Perhaps in a year, I might. However, upon completion, I felt, ‘I never want to wear that annoying suit and that cumbersome headgear again.’

Although this TV series is a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ 2022 movie “The Batman”, it’s important to note that the filmmaker has clarified that viewers will not find Robert Pattinson’s version of Batman appearing in this television production.

Reeves described the show as being a continuation of what’s inherent to Batman’s world. We recognize it as the world of Batman, he explained. However, you’re venturing down a new path. The presence of Batman, the Riddler, and all the events from the last film linger. They influence the storyline and serve as our starting point.

The Penguin premieres on HBO and Max on Sept. 19.
