As a long-time comic book fan and someone who has been following the ups and downs of Gambit’s big screen journey, I must say, Channing Tatum‘s portrayal in Deadpool & Wolverine was a delightful surprise. In the grand scheme of appearances within Deadpool & Wolverine, none caught me off guard quite like Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit. Unlike veterans such as Wesley Snipes’ Blade and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra who had donned their respective roles before, Tatum was new to the Ragin’ Cajun character. The planned Gambit spinoff by Disney in 2019 never materialized after years of attempts at 20th Century Fox. Consequently, the 34th Marvel movie needed to create a fresh look for Tatum’s Gambit, abandoning his usual glowing eyes, but there was a compelling rationale behind this alteration in appearance.
Bill Corso, the makeup designer on Deadpool & Wolverine, went on Instagram to share a picture he took of Channing Tatum suited up as Gambit, but with glowing eyes photoshopped in, as well as a closer look at the character’s cowl, one of the staples of Gambit’s costume. On the subject of why Gambit’s eyes didn’t glow during the latest MCU installment, Corso said this:
For those pondering about his eyes’ appearance, my original suggestion was black contacts with a glowing red center to stay true to the comic, but ultimately, it was determined that his eyes should only emit a red glow when energized or in the process of energizing something. This effect is achieved digitally and I must admit, having consistently red eyes might have given off a spooky vibe, potentially overshadowing the character’s engaging dialogue.
