Danny finds himself deeply in debt, and his plan to pilfer Curry’s jersey for resale takes an unexpected turn when he’s caught red-handed by Steph and his trusted associate Kimberly Gregg, portrayed by Ego Nwodim from “SNL”.
The scam grew bigger and bigger until he invented a story about his daughter, who was supposedly in perfect health, succumbing to an unknown illness. This tale moved Steph to propose organizing a charity basketball game to collect funds for Charlie (Layla Scalisi), although Danny’s former wife Sam (Ayden Mayeri) showed some reluctance.
Initially, I finished watching the show “Mr. Throwback” before an interview with its executive producers David Caspe, Matthew Libman, and Daniel Libman. Although I wasn’t a fan of the Golden State Warriors who usually watched Steph Curry on TV to root against him in games against the Cleveland Cavaliers, I found the series entertaining starting from the very first episode. Steph Curry is not overly self-important, and they described working with him as an “ultimate dream come true.
Watching the initial episode on NBC sparked a desire to re-explore the entire first season, which is quite convenient if you have Peacock’s streaming service at your disposal. The Best Way To Watch Mr. Throwback, According To The EPs
Previously, David Caspe and the Libman brothers had teamed up on several comedies, notably “Happy Endings” (which made TopMob’s list of the 100 greatest sitcoms of all time) and “Champaign ILL,” both starring Adam Pally. Their latest project, “Mr. Throwback,” is now available for streaming on Peacock Premium. I think the type of storytelling that we were able to do is basically tell this serialized story, this six-part story, essentially like a long movie. We think that’s more conducive for streaming and just able to take those sort of storytelling detours that normally maybe wouldn’t be conducive for broadcast, or the type of things that people are used to on broadcast. They’re more used to [them] on streaming with dramas and the advent of bingeable television. So it felt like that really lent itself to the premise of this show, and and allowed us to kind of make good on the premise.
Initially, all six episodes of “Mr. Throwback” were made available simultaneously in August, enabling viewers to watch the entire series from beginning to end on its premiere day. This debut on NBC could serve as an effective lure to attract people who typically prefer network TV to explore Peacock for the remaining five episodes. When I posed this question to the three executive producers about whether they felt the comedy was suitable for binge-watching, they replied:
- Matthew Libman: “It’s the best show that’s ever been created. It’s the best show for bingeing that’s ever been bingeable.”
- David Caspe: “And non-bingeing.”
- Daniel Libman: “Honestly, if you’re someone who likes to take a break –
- Matthew Libman: “Take five minutes in between.”
- Daniel Libman: “If you have someone that has a lot of self control, say wants to watch it over many months, I wouldn’t do that. I would finish it and then go back.”
It’s not difficult to see, from between the lines, that the producers (EPs) are likely holding out hope for a second season based on Peacock viewership, but having watched the show myself, I can definitely agree it’s worth watching. Naturally, as comedians, they added some humor in their statements.
- Matthew Libman: “Binge it immediately and then watch it. And then also, if you have other devices that you can just put it on, even if you’re not in the room, just let it play.”
- David Caspe: “And if you have access to email, I think you email the binge service, the streamer, and tell them how much you enjoyed bingeing would be good too.”
- Matthew Libman: “Or write to your congressman and say ‘we demand more episodes.'”
As a devoted fan, I can confidently say that Mr. Throwback stands tall as a testament to Peacock’s growing prowess in comedy productions. It’s only a matter of time before we find out if the series has garnered enough viewership for a second season. Given its airing after a blockbuster like America’s Got Talent on NBC, I can’t help but feel optimistic about the show’s potential for continued life. At the very least, this scheduling suggests to me that there’s still hope for more episodes in the future.
