Original Goonies Stars Shoot Down Recent Sequel Rumors

As a child of the ’80s, I vividly remember the magical world of The Goonies that unfolded before my eyes in 1985. The film was more than just a treasure hunt; it was an adventure, a lesson in friendship, and a testament to the power of imagination. It’s a timeless classic that has stood the test of time, a movie I proudly share with my own kids today, hoping they’ll feel the same sense of wonder and excitement I felt back then.

It appears the chatter about a possible Goonies 2 coming out next year is merely speculation. This information comes from original cast members like Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman, who have stated that they are unaware of any plans for a sequel to the 1985 fan-favorite movie being developed at any film studio. Contrary to a report from The Sun last month, there is no truth to the claim that production on a Goonies sequel is set to start next year for a release in 2026.

In a recent Instagram post, Plimpton clarified that neither herself nor anyone else is associated with the rumored sequel, and contrary to speculation, Steven Spielberg is not set to direct it. Instead, Plimpton emphasized the importance of checking one’s voter registration in preparation for the upcoming presidential election.

According to Feldman, who starred as Clark Devereaux in “The Goonies,” he recently used social media to debunk The Sun’s claims about a sequel. He stated that neither he nor any of the original cast members are currently attached to the project, and there is no truth to the rumors that a make-believe film is underway. Additionally, Feldman shared a trailer for his upcoming 4K release of “The Birthday,” which came out in 2004. Keep being unique, Corey!

We Don’t Need The Goonies 2

First released in 1985, Richard Donner’s adventure film, now a timeless classic, captivated audiences immediately due to its talented cast, side-splitting treasure hunt scenes, and heartfelt subplot revolving around two children battling to prevent their home from being repossessed. With the signature ingredients that Spielberg is renowned for, it has endured the test of time to become a cherished family film that parents happily introduce to their children today, hoping to instill in them the same sense of magical nostalgia we all felt during the 1980s.

Over the years, discussions about a follow-up to the 1985 movie “The Goonies” have been frequent, but it’s never materialized – and maybe that’s for the better. The original film is hard to surpass, and creating a sequel now would likely focus on the children of the original cast embarking on their own adventures – an idea we can do without. The first movie offers enough excitement, chaos, humor, and tension that any modern-day remake would just be a weak imitation. The storyline would likely be too predictable, with poor cell phone reception, someone getting kidnapped, and ultimately, lessons about friendship and love being learned by everyone involved. I’d rather stick with the original, thank you very much.

So take The Sun’s reporting with a grain of salt (as you always should), and listen to those who are in the know. The Goonies 2 is not happening anytime soon. Instead of holding out hope, go watch the original instead. It’s just as good today as it was 40 years ago, and if you don’t already have it in your physical media collection, it’s available to rent or purchase on all PVOD platforms.
