As a cinephile with over three decades of film-viewing under my belt, I must admit that the prospect of David Fincher remaking Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Rope” has me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, Fincher’s cinematic genius is undeniable, having crafted masterpieces like “Fight Club,” “Se7en,” and “Gone Girl.” Yet, the original “Rope” is a technical tour de force that I doubt any modern director could surpass, especially given James Stewart’s iconic performance.
It appears that David Fincher is allegedly working on a new project for Netflix, which is said to be a reinterpretation of the 1948 Alfred Hitchcock movie “Rope.” However, since Netflix has yet to confirm this news, it remains unofficial at this point. The claim has been substantiated by Kasey Moore, founder and editor-in-chief of What’s on Netflix, but we’re still considering it a rumor until Netflix provides an official statement.
David Fincher originally planned to direct a remake of Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train,” featuring Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck. However, instead of moving forward with that project, reports from World of Reel suggest he has switched gears for a remake of “Rope.” At this point, details about Fincher’s plans for the “Rope” remake are scarce since it was only recently confirmed, but there are whispers that Charlize Theron might be cast in the film. Additionally, Steven Knight, who worked on “Peaky Blinders,” is rumored to have penned an early draft of the script.
Although David Fincher boasts an impressive filmography with movies like Fight Club, Se7en, and Gone Girl, his intentions for remaking Rope have raised concerns among some fans. The original film, a technical marvel even for Hitchcock, showcased ingeniously hidden camera cuts to create the illusion of one continuous shot. Additionally, James Stewart, an indelible actor known for It’s A Wonderful Life and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, among many other roles, delivered a memorable performance in Rope, making it challenging to replicate his brilliance. Given the high bar set by the original film, fans are understandably apprehensive that even a talented director like Fincher might struggle to meet these expectations.
Similar to many films by Alfred Hitchcock, the storyline of “Rope” appears straightforward at first glance. Two men murder one of their classmates using a rope in a morbid intellectual experiment, and subsequently host a dinner party with the victim’s fiancée and her professor – who unwittingly influenced the crime through his lectures – among the guests. It is yet to be determined whether Fincher will adjust this original narrative, considering its past success. However, one aspect of the film that may require updating is the subtle hints of homosexual subtext between the two murderers, which could potentially be refreshed by incorporating an explicit romantic plot line to increase the suspense and intrigue in the movie.
David Fincher Reportedly Has a Few New Netflix Projects in Development
Rope is far from Fincher’s only project right now — another reason why some film fanatics are hesitant to feel excited about the upcoming Hitchcock remake. After all, Fincher’s Strangers on a Trainwas announced back in 2015, yet remains unfinished to this day. And despite his undeniable success with recent releases such as The Killer, some of Fincher’s other in-development works are particularly controversial among fans. For example, his upcoming American remake of the hit South Korean thriller Squid Game has many fans opining that Fincher’s talents are better used elsewhere.
If Fincher manages to surmount the obstacles that have been impeding his remake of Strangers on a Train, it could be something exciting to anticipate. Though there have been some missteps in his career, Fincher has undeniably demonstrated his directorial prowess with films like Fight Club, which still holds audiences spellbound even after more than two decades. Regrettably, given the numerous projects Fincher is currently involved in, Rope may end up being postponed for a later date.
