COS FW24 Draws Design Inspiration From the "Elegance of Movement"

As a devoted follower of fashion who’s spent years navigating the labyrinthine world of haute couture, I can confidently say that COS has once again struck a chord with their Fall/Winter 2024 collection. Creative Director Karin Gustafsson’s ability to weave together themes of balletic grace and natural beauty is nothing short of enchanting.

COS is renowned for its unique draping methods, aiming for a harmonious fit between customers and the brand’s attire – as if they’re working together seamlessly instead of being separate parties. For the Fall/Winter 2024 collection, Creative Director Karin Gustafsson sought to convey this idea in the label’s third runway presentation. She found inspiration in ballet and graceful movement while designing an impressive collection characterized by fluid pieces.

In every season, our team dedicates a substantial amount of time exploring the most recent exhibitions at galleries and museums to gather ideas. As stated by Gustafsson to TopMob following the Brooklyn show, we prioritize quality, suitability, and craftsmanship when creating the foundation for our collection. For this particular season, we additionally took inspiration from ballet and graceful movement, which is reflected in the flowing silhouettes and subtly sculpted, draped components featured in our designs.

Besides being inspired by the surrounding natural environment, Gustafsson also incorporated this influence into her collection through carefully chosen materials, a muted earthy color scheme, intricate textures, and what she refers to as “mood-elevating” green accents scattered across the flowing designs.

During every stage of our design journey, we focus on how the wearer will experience each piece, including its fit and movement across the body – taking into account the shapes, embellishments, and overall style. Gustafsson emphasized that the defining characteristic of this collection is its elegance.

The designs in the Autumn/Winter 2024 collection feature softer silhouettes, ideal for layering. Each item seems to come alive independently, falling naturally, with both flowing blouses and dress-like shapes appearing alongside gentle tailoring.

The 42-look showcase saw standout silhouettes including wool outerwear, double-breasted blazers, and lots of layer-able jacketing – but if it was up to Gustaffson, it’s the tailored barrel-leg trousers that take the quiet-luxury cake.

She clarifies that the designs have a timeless yet contemporary vibe. Her approach involves creating high-end essentials characterized by distinctive shapes and polished design elements, which radiate an aura of luxury and class. She’s particularly captivated by the sophistication of the sheer separates, as they feature delicately structured forms with careful attention to inner panels and gentle draping around the neckline. Each item is painstakingly made, ensuring perfection in tailoring, a flawless fit, and the use of top-quality materials.
