Hugh Grant Explains 'What Went Wrong' With Dungeons & Dragons Movie

As a seasoned movie-goer who’s seen more films than I can remember, I must say that the performance of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” left me slightly perplexed. While the ensemble cast and the game’s popularity should have guaranteed a blockbuster success, it seems we were all victims of poor market research, as Hugh Grant so eloquently put it.

Although the blockbuster role-playing game adaptation, with its impressive ensemble cast of stars, has established itself as a hit on streaming platforms, it did not become the box office sensation that Paramount Pictures anticipated during its initial run in cinemas. Grant, who portrays Forge Fitzwilliam, one of the secondary villains, thinks he’s found an explanation for this unexpected outcome. The movie also featured Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, and Regé-Jean Page, a lineup of stars that would typically guarantee a successful run at the box office.

Hugh Grant expressed his thoughts to The Hollywood Reporter, suggesting that the production team could have conducted more in-depth research to determine if the public was genuinely keen on watching “Honor Among Thieves” from the get-go. Despite personally adoring the film, he noted that while Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts might have been eager, he felt the general audience’s enthusiasm may not have been as high before its release. He explained:

It seems like nobody conducted market research prior to this venture, which might have been a significant mistake. In simpler terms, it appears that people assumed the audience wouldn’t be interested in a movie based on this particular game without first asking the public for their input.

The final scene of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” hinted at another adventure for this tough band of characters, implying a possible sequel. Many actors involved have shown enthusiasm for reuniting, but the original movie’s box office success may mean we’ll have to wait quite a while. It appears that gathering the entire cast is just as challenging for top Hollywood stars as it is for everyday D&D players.

Dungeons & Dragons 2 Could Still Happen

The movie “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” didn’t fail at the box office entirely. In fact, it managed to earn $208 million internationally, making it a financially successful film. Unfortunately, its performance at the box office dashed any dreams of expanding it into a franchise. Interestingly, before the movie was even released, Paramount+ had planned for a potential franchise, including an obvious sequel and a live-action series. However, earlier this year, it was announced that Paramount+ had scrapped their plans for the series. Currently, there’s still a glimmer of hope as another distributor might take over the rights to the show, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

Just as many fans thought, a second movie seemed unrealistic, considering the original’s box office results. However, Chris Pine hinted that there might still be a possibility for success, comparing it to rolling a 20 in a game – a highly favorable outcome. Although the odds of a sequel are uncertain (two dice references), Pine expressed optimism that Hasbro will produce another film in the future, potentially garnering more critical acclaim than its predecessor.

It’s quite likely that we’ll see another installment since I believe Hasbro holds the copyright. Given their potential options for financing and making it profitable, I suspect they will proceed with it.

Although fans are busy sketching numerous character profiles that might not see gameplay, we can only appreciate “Honor Among Thieves” as a single-use adventure for the time being. In the interim, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is garnering a substantial viewer base on its regular streaming platform, Paramount+.
