Michael Che Recalls Colin Jost’s “Weekend Update” Joke on ‘SNL’ That Left Him “So Frustrated”

As a dedicated SNL fan with years of watching under my belt, I must say that Michael Che‘s frustration over the “jalapeño business” joke is not only understandable but also relatable. After all, who among us hasn’t had our favorite bit cut and then resurrected to hilarious effect by a fellow comedian? It’s like finding out your best friend has been secretly dating your crush – it stings a little, but you can’t help but laugh at the audacity.

On Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” Michael Che and Colin Jost often trade barbs, but there’s a quip that used to leave me, Michael Che, feeling a tad frustrated.

In a recent chat on the “Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade” podcast, these Saturday Night Live performers were questioned about whether they had ever told each other something along the lines of “If you pull a stunt like that again, I’ll give you a good kicking.

Che replied, “Indeed, the jalapeño situation really got me heated,” and Jost said, “I guess you were just annoyed because it turned out so successfully.

In the final episode of season 40, which was broadcast in May 2015, the two comedians revived a joke that had been removed from an earlier show. “Ohio police apprehended a woman who is said to have stabbed her boyfriend for consuming all their salsa,” Michael Che stated. “You’d be furious too if your partner was in the jalapeño trade.

During rehearsal, when you told that joke, it stood out because I hadn’t heard it before. I can’t recall the context, but the punchline was ‘jalapeño business.’ When he delivered it on air, I threatened to resign, saying I wouldn’t stay if he made that joke publicly. To my surprise, it was a hit and I was furious. I felt lost, wondering what our next steps should be.

Jost commented, “Honestly, I was considering removing it, but seeing how much it upsets you changed my mind. So, I made the decision to definitely go ahead with it.

Che and Jost have been serving as co-hosts for “Weekend Update” since its season 40 debut, making them the longest-running hosts in the segment’s history. They will continue their tenure for SNL’s historic 50th season, which kicks off on NBC and Peacock on September 28.
