As a dedicated fan of reality TV competitions, I couldn’t be more thrilled about The Traitors’ historic Emmy win! Alan Cumming‘s heartfelt and genuine acceptance speech only added to the joy of this momentous occasion. His humility and gratitude towards the cast, crew, and even Holland were truly inspiring.
I’m thrilled to share that “The Traitors” emerged victorious in the category of best reality competition series at the 2024 Emmys! This achievement, marking their second season, follows an incredible milestone – our outstanding host, Alan Cumming, shattered RuPaul Charles’ 8-year reign as the best reality or competition program host at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards just last weekend. What a journey it has been!
Cumming expressed his heartfelt gratitude during the acceptance of the award: ‘Thank you everyone, and a special thank you to the Academy. We’re incredibly appreciative because as a new show, your loyalty in sticking with us means a lot—it’s a wonderful quality we truly value,’ he said.
Later, the team from Studio Lambert, responsible for creating our popular series, joined him onstage. “Here are the people who work tirelessly at Studio Lambert, the studio that brought this show to life,” he said. “Please take a moment to applaud them, as they put so much heart and effort into their craft.
Additionally, Cumming expressed gratitude to Peacock for their kindness and backing. It’s fantastic being a part of this innovative streaming platform. We appreciate them immensely. He extended his appreciation not only to the team within our ‘castle’, which includes the cast and crew, who tirelessly work under the wet Scottish weather, but also to Scotland itself, acknowledging that he owes it all to its striking beauty; it’s like working alongside a magnificent co-star.
Besides thanking just one country, he expressed gratitude during his speech to Holland as well: “I feel we should acknowledge Holland more, considering they originated many shows like The Traitors. It seems there’s something special in their water, a secret we should discover and adopt. If America were to drink it, our problems might just vanish,” Cumming stated.
The series’ victory was secured following the acquisition of four Critics Choice Real TV Awards in June, which included accolades for best competition series and best unscripted ensemble cast. In simpler terms, The Traitors, an adaptation of the successful Dutch series De Verraders, borrows concepts from social deduction games such as Mafia and Werewolf. The show follows a mix of reality TV veterans and newcomers as they work together to identify the “traitors” within their group before getting “eliminated” by those pretending to be loyal members, with a substantial cash reward on offer.
The game concludes once all the deceivers are expelled. To ensure victory, these deceivers must employ trickery to persuade their fellow players that they are not guilty.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August, the show host revealed the effort required for his role, stating, “Hosting this show feels like a major acting job to me.” Cumming explained, “I think of it as a character I’m playing. Of course, it’s still me – my name is Alan Cumming – but it’s not truly me. I don’t naturally sound like that, I don’t usually dress in such a way, and I don’t own a castle, which is unfortunate.
The Peacock show has just been given the green light for a third run. Notable figures like Tom Sandoval from Vanderpump Rules, Dorinda Medley formerly of Real Housewives of New York, Chrishell Stause of Selling Sunset, and Sam Asghari, ex-spouse of Britney Spears, will be part of the upcoming season.
