As a die-hard fan of Da’Vine Joy Randolph, I’ve been absolutely thrilled to witness her meteoric rise in Hollywood over the past few years. Her journey from the big screen to the small screen has been nothing short of spectacular, and it’s a testament to her undeniable talent and charisma.
When an actress like Da’Vine Joy Randolph is nominated for awards as frequently as she has been this year, a reliable and innovative glamour team becomes a necessity in the professional world. For the past two years, Randolph has relied on the unwavering style choices and creativity of her team: Stylist duo Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald, hairstylist Tai Simon, and makeup artist Sheika Daley. Daley, who also works with Serena Williams, notes that Randolph “knows what she likes” but is open to the creative ideas presented by her team. “This trust has only grown stronger over time,” Daley adds, “which makes our collaboration feel effortless.
At the Emmys ceremony on Sunday in 2024, their teamwork was evident as they prepared Randolph, who was nominated for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her role as Detective Williams on Only Murders in the Building (one of Hulu’s 21 nominations). The group gathered at a hotel, where the atmosphere was laid-back and serene, according to Daley. “We grooved to classic ’90s R&B tunes, shared laughter and jokes, and made something extraordinary together.
To create a daring and unconventional appearance for this occasion, one of Randolph’s main instructions was to deviate from the traditional, old-Hollywood styles she had previously favored during the film award season earlier this year (where she shone in her role in “The Holdovers“). As Daley explains, “We definitely aimed to change things up. The Oscars was a significant event, so for this look, we wanted to inject a different kind of vibe – maintaining the glamour but adding a touch of playfulness and freshness.
To start off, Simon was the one who took the lead. They share numerous hair folders filled with various color schemes, styles, and cuts – from classic to trendy. As Simon puts it, “she’s just as passionate about hair as I am.” It’s also worth mentioning that Simon is responsible for taking care of Zendaya’s lovely locks. For the Emmys hairstyle, Simon aimed for a design that was both traditional yet daring.
Despite the Sophie Couture gown concealing it, her hair appeared wet and boasted a vibrant rusty red hue, thanks to myDensity by Guy Tang.
As a gamer, I’d say, “After wrapping up my gaming sessions, it was Daley’s turn to take the spotlight for her beauty routine. She dedicated roughly 90 minutes to her makeup application, explaining, ‘I prefer doing makeup after hair so I can appreciate the overall look.’ In truth, though, she had started the process days prior with skin care. Our primary goal was maintaining hydration and tranquility in her skin. I recommended she test Lancôme’s Advanced Génifique Serum a few days before the event to enhance that radiant glow. And as always, I reminded her to stay well-hydrated.
Daley mentions that both parties are in agreement on maintaining a natural, unfussed skin appearance and avoiding excessive product application. To achieve this, Daley opted for Lancôme’s Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation, which provides coverage without feeling too heavy. Heavy contouring isn’t something Daley prefers; instead, they aim to accentuate the subject’s natural features rather than concealing them. The soft matte finish wasn’t the only fall ’24 trend that Daley discussed for this look – there were more trends to come.
In addition, we incorporated metallic accents, yet with a unique twist. Specifically, Daley opted for the Lancôme Hypnose Drama Eyeshadow Palette to create subtle purples, and the Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner was used to accentuate the inner corners in a winged shape. This liner complemented the hues and textures of the dress without overpowering it. To emphasize the eyes as the main attraction, Daley applied multiple coats of Lancôme Lash Idole Mascara and added plenty of dramatic lashes.
To further accentuate the viral eyebrow style of Randolph, Daley subtly emphasized their existing features using Lancôme Brow Define Pencil, adding just enough definition to bring out their natural beauty without overpowering their already impressive shape and thickness.
According to Daley, the secret to longevity at award shows and post-parties lies in layering and setting. She applied Lancôme’s La Base Pro Primer before makeup application, followed by their Long Time No Shine Loose Setting Powder, blotting papers, and Fix It Forget It Setting Spray as final touches. This way, her makeup remained impeccable regardless of how long the night lasted. Randolph also carried these items in her bag.
Instead of maintaining the original state for hairstylist Simon, it’s more about preserving an attractive appearance even when natural shedding occurs; her goal is to ensure that the hairdo still presents a stunning style despite falling out. This concept, indeed, embodies the spirit of adaptation – a quintessential Hollywood mentality.
