‘Shogun’ Team Celebrates the Importance of Translation in Emmy Win for Drama Series

As a passionate fan of historical dramas, I can confidently say that this year’s Emmys have been nothing short of exhilarating! The victory of “Shogun” as the Best Drama Series is not just a testament to its exceptional storytelling but also a celebration of cultural diversity and cross-border collaboration.

Shogun capped its big night at the 2024 Emmys with a pivotal win.

In the Emmy Awards, the FX/Hulu series clinched the title of best drama series, marking its fourth accolade of the evening. Remarkably, Shogun, with a whopping 25 nominations in its first season, triumphed in this category against other notable competitors like The Crown, Fallout, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, and 3 Body Problem.

As I stood up on stage to accept the award, I couldn’t help but express my gratitude to those who made our show possible. “Thank you to the executives who took a chance on a high-budget, subtitled Japanese period drama that hinges on a poetry contest,” I joked. “I still can’t believe you went for it, but I’m grateful for your trust in this amazing team.” (As a gamer) I feel like we just scored an unlikely victory and it’s all thanks to their belief in us!

He went on to say, “Shogun is a series that explores the concept of translation – it’s not about what gets misplaced, but rather the discoveries made when conducting safety meetings in two languages, and the realization of avoiding walking on tatami mats with work boots.

After that, Marks joined forces with renowned actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who delivered a message in Japanese. Translated partially, it said, “The fervor and aspirations you’ve passed down have traversed oceans and boundaries.

At the ceremony, “Shogun” received its fourth award, with previous wins being given to Sanada for best actor in a drama series, Anna Sawai for best actress in a drama series, and Frederick E. O. Toye for directing in a drama series. This television production, inspired by James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, broke a Creative Arts Emmys record by winning an impressive 14 awards over the weekend.

In the 2023 Emmy Awards, the TV series “Succession” was recognized as the best in the drama category for its final season, making it the third consecutive year that this HBO show has reigned supreme in this particular category.

At the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy served as the hosts for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.
