Fantastic Four's Ebon Moss Bachrach Doesn't Know What The Thing Looks Like

As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the anticipation surrounding Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps is palpable, and the enigma shrouding Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Thing is just one among many intriguing mysteries swirling around this highly anticipated film.

In a twist reminiscent of comic book lore, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, in Fantastic Four: First Steps, confessed that he remains unaware of how his character will appear on the big screen due to the ongoing CGI work. Alongside Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), and Joseph Quinn (The Human Torch), Moss-Bachrach is part of the talented ensemble that’s bringing Marvel’s founding family to life within the MCU. Despite having delved deep into his character by studying rocks for preparation, Moss-Bachrach, fresh off an Emmy win for his supporting role in The Bear, remains as clueless about the rock he’ll transform into as the rest of us, since the final VFX version of The Thing has yet to be shown to him.

During an interview at the Emmys, Moss-Bachrach appeared unusually clean-shaven. When asked about his new facial hairstyle by a reporter, he explained it was due to his work involving motion capture on the film “Fantastic Four: First Steps”. In simpler terms, he said, “I’ve been shaving my beard recently because I’ve been busy with motion capture for this project.” Earlier this year, pictures from the set of “First Steps” hinted at a practical suit for the Thing. Given that Moss-Bachrach acknowledges his involvement in motion capture for the movie, it has led fans to speculate that the leaked photos might have actually shown a stand-in prop for Marvel Studios’ production.

Quite unexpectedly, Ebon Moss-Bachrach remains unaware of how his portrayal of The Thing will appear on the silver screen. Inquired about this matter, the actor candidly admitted:

Although I’ve only seen rough sketches, I can’t wait to lay my eyes on the final product as it’s going to be quite different from those initial glimpses. There are numerous vendors and top-notch animators working tirelessly on it, with hundreds of people involved in total. We’ve been filming for approximately six weeks now, but I still haven’t had a peek at the results yet. I’m unsure about the release schedule, but my anticipation is building with each passing day.

The film, titled Fantastic Four: First Steps, has many aspects shrouded in mystery. Not only does it mark the debut of the legendary family within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it also promises the long-awaited on-screen appearance of Galactus – a more faithful portrayal than the ‘fart cloud’ version seen in Rise of the Silver Surfer. Previews at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year displayed a design that closely resembles its comic book counterpart, yet it remains uncertain if this will be Galactus’s ultimate cinematic incarnation.

Fans are eagerly awaiting how Marvel Cinematic Universe will portray the character from Moss-Bachrach’s “The Thing.” Despite some audience members questioning the practical suit based on the actor’s motion capture comments, Moss-Bachrach has reassured fans that during filming, it was indeed him in front of the camera, fueling further curiosity. Moss-Bachrach stated:

“I do everything. It’s my face and everything, but it’s just, I’m about 1200 pounds.”

At present, the filming of “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is actively being carried out. It was recently disclosed that the filming is happening right now in London.

Fantastic Four: First Steps
is expected to hit theaters on July 25, 2024.
