The Last of Us Season 2 Release Date Window Revealed by HBO

The Last of Us Season 2 Release Date Window Revealed by HBO

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours navigating the post-apocalyptic landscapes of various dystopian films, I can confidently say that the news about The Last of Us Season 2 is music to my ears (or should I say, eyes). HBO’s decision to air it in the first half of 2025 promises a much-needed dose of adrenaline and suspense.

Enthusiasts of “The Last of Us” might be revisiting the infected world created by HBO much earlier than expected. Based on the critically acclaimed video game series with the same title, produced by Naughty Dog studios, “The Last of Us” delves into the remains of human civilization more than a decade after a fungal zombie outbreak. The story follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), as they traverse a devastated nation, with Ellie potentially holding the key to the infection’s cure. Amidst high anticipation for Season 2, fans are eagerly waiting to learn when Joel and Ellie will grace our screens once more.

Casey Bloys, HBO and Max Content’s Chairman and CEO, shared with Deadline during this year’s Emmys that the premieres for most of their shows will likely occur around the first half of 2025. Despite FX dominating this year’s awards, HBO is gearing up to make a comeback in 2025, as they have planned to unveil two of their highly anticipated series by next year’s award season. Alongside The Last of Us, the third installment of the popular dark comedy The White Lotus is also expected to debut around the same timeframe. Bloys further emphasized that these shows are likely to fall within the Emmy submission window.

During the talk, Casey Bloys disclosed that they have caught glimpses of the second season of “The Last of Us”, expressing only positive sentiments about co-showrunner Craig Mazin. Translation: I’ve watched The Last of Us. I believe everyone will adore what [co-creator] Craig [Mazin] is working on. However, Bloys hasn’t seen a full episode of The White Lotus yet, but they are well aware of the production process, saying, “I haven’t seen anything from The White Lotus so far, but I paid them a visit. Naturally, I’ve looked at daily footage and read scripts, so there’s plenty of anticipation for both shows.

Casey Bloys’ announcement that “The Last of Us” will air next year indicates that the show’s post-production is progressing smoothly. As reported by MovieWeb in August, filming for Season 2 had concluded, as confirmed by editor Timothy Good through a touching social media post. In his message, Good expressed:

Great job wrapped up! Huge congratulations to the exceptional team behind #TheLastOfUs season 2. Your dedication will soon be rewarded with a warm welcome home!

Besides reintroducing characters Joel and Ellie, Season 2 of The Last of Us brings forth some significant new figures in the post-apocalyptic landscape. For most of the upcoming season, Dina (played by Isabella Merced) will accompany Ellie. Assuming the series stays true to the games as its first season did, expect a notable time leap since Ellie and Joel establish themselves in Jackson, Wyoming. Ellie swiftly develops a friendship with Dina, and together they embark on an out-of-settlement mission (spoilers are redacted here).

In addition to an exciting new character, the second season of “The Last of Us” will also feature one of the game’s most formidable adversaries (based on personal opinion). Kaitlyn Dever portrays Abby in this upcoming series. Previously a member of the Fireflies, Abby harbors intense animosity towards Joel due to the dramatic ending of Season 1.
