As a longtime admirer of both Porter and Packer, I must say that this collaboration is nothing short of a dream come true for me! Growing up in the 80s, I was always captivated by the iconic Tanker bag with its military-inspired design and bold orange linings. Now, seeing it reinvented with sustainable materials and vibrant new colors is truly a sight to behold.
To mark its 40th anniversary, Porter Airways has set up a special pop-up store at Packer in New Jersey, showcasing an entirely novel tanker collection. This temporary shop-in-shop offers the classic shapes from the original Tanker line in eco-friendly materials that have not been used before, such as plant-based nylon fabrics.
Introduced in 1983, the Tanker series drew significant design influence from the attire of the U.S. Air Force. The iconic messenger bag from this collection resembled MA-1 flight jackets, crafted from nylon and styled like military uniforms in army green, black, and featuring vibrant orange interiors. This particular release signifies the initial application of a plant-based nylon—manufactured from corn and castor oil plants—in a mass production line by Porter.
Porter enlisted the expertise of their original artisans from Komaxon, responsible for coloring the ’83 series, to produce vibrant Iron Blue and Olive Green hues for the collection. These colors are incorporated across over 40 different designs. The Japanese dye factory has refined a precise color-matching method that relies significantly on the keen eyes of experienced color experts.
Established over a hundred years ago in Yonkers, NY, the debut of Packer’s collection at the store aligns perfectly with their focus on preserving their historical roots for this particular line. Additionally, this partnership subtly acknowledges the extended tradition of creative interaction between Japanese and American brands.
