John Cena to Star in ‘Matchbox,’ Based on Mattel Car Toyline

As a gamer with a rich history of playing with toy cars, this news about John Cena starring in “Matchbox” has me revving my engines! The fact that Sam Hargrave, the director behind the adrenaline-pumping “Extraction,” is at the helm only adds fuel to the excitement. I’ve always been a fan of David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper’s work, so the screenplay promises a thrilling ride!

John Cena has signed on to star in Matchbox, a live-action take on the classic Mattel car toyline.

Apple Original Films has secured an impressive movie collection produced by Skydance and Mattel Films. The action-packed film will be directed by Sam Hargrave, who gained fame for his work on the intense Extraction series.

The project is rapidly advancing with a screenplay penned by David Coggeshall, known for his work on the action-comedy series ‘The Family Plan’, and Jonathan Tropper, a talented author and writer who created the action-adventure movie script titled ‘The Adam Project’ starring Ryan Reynolds.

In 1953, Matchbox became the popular toy brand that it is today, and Mattel took over ownership of it in 1997. In the world of die-cast cars, Mattel went head-to-head with Matchbox by introducing their own line, Hot Wheels. The story goes that Jack Odell, an automotive enthusiast, designed the first Matchbox car for his daughter, who was only allowed to bring a toy to school if it could fit into a matchbox. When her classmates also wanted a “matchbox car,” a legendary brand came into being.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m keeping my fingers crossed about the upcoming cinematic adventure! Unlike previous attempts with Hot Wheels, this seems to be the debut of Matchbox on the silver screen, an exciting twist in the world of toy-based movies.

The team behind this project includes David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger from Skydance, along with Robbie Brenner who represents Mattel Films.

The current project represents the newest joint venture between Skydance and Apple. There are multiple Skydance-Apple productions in the pipeline, including “The Gorge”, an adventure film featuring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, as well as “Fountain of Youth”, a highly anticipated feature from Guy Ritchie, which stars Natalie Portman and John Krasinski.

Cena recently starred opposite Akwafina in Amazon’s action-comedy Jackpot, and is currently shooting season two of the Max original series Peacemaker, based on the DC heroes. He is also prepping to embark on his farewell WWE tour in 2025.

Cena is repped by WME, Intenta Media, and Johnson, Shapiro.
