Having grown up in the UK, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of grime and rap, and it was heartening to witness such a celebration of its rich heritage.
Adidas Originals and JD Sports collaborated in London to honor the creative spirit of youth culture through a private live performance. This event was orchestrated by Kano, an influential rapper-actor who serves as their brand ambassador. Not only is Kano renowned for shaping grime music, but he also established Duppy Share, his own Caribbean rum label. As such, he is accustomed to blending tradition with modernity while staying true to his roots.
Collaborating with the autonomous radio station Balamii, Kano chose nine artists and disc jockeys to compile a collection showcasing the UK’s top talent. This selection encompassed Bashy, Skrapz, HOPE, Enny, and Grace Acladna, along with guest DJs Plastician, Izzy Bossy, and Kim Turnball. These artists reflect a diverse range of cultures and musical backgrounds, embodying the multicultural spirit of London.
For the night, Omeara underwent a transformation, bathed in Balamii’s distinctive blue hue alongside visuals of legendary grime and rap artists. The fortunate attendees sipped custom cocktails infused with Kano’s signature rum, while Young MasterChef judge and Chef Big Has crafted his unique interpretation of the classic kebab. Enhancing the dish by adding BBQ lamb chips and salsa rosso, Chef Big Has drew inspiration from Kano’s Tottenham background as a key element.
The gathering wasn’t merely a showcase of music and fashion, but an expression of the strength in unity and cultural pride. By uniting a variety of musicians, DJs, and artists under one roof, adidas Originals and JD Sports acknowledged the profound impact of the UK on global youth culture. Each aspect, from the tunes to the cuisine, reflected the city’s vibrant artistic soul, instilling excitement and anticipation among attendees for future endeavors.
