As a seasoned auto enthusiast with a penchant for performance vehicles and a deep-rooted appreciation for the fusion of sporty aesthetics and practicality, I can wholeheartedly say that CUPRA has truly outdone themselves with their latest offering – the Terramar. Having attended numerous automotive events over the years, I must admit that the unveiling at the IMAX cinema in Barcelona was nothing short of spectacular, particularly the film by J.A. Bayona that encapsulated the synergy between CUPRA’s philosophy and the America’s Cup.
The innovative Spanish car manufacturer, CUPRA, recently revealed its newest model, the Terramar, which is designed to set new standards and dominate the sporty SUV segment across Europe.
The opening event at Barcelona’s IMAX cinema left audiences, both in person and online, spellbound by an awe-inspiring show that breathed life into the world of CUPRA. This spectacular occasion, titled “There is no second chance,” took inspiration from the America’s Cup sailing competition and culminated with the reveal of the CUPRA Terramar. To make things even more exciting, the event featured a film by acclaimed Spanish director J.A. Bayona, who emphasized the harmony between CUPRA’s ideals and the America’s Cup. As CUPRA’s Brand Ambassador, Bayona expressed that this movie embodies his beliefs—honoring sports competitions, encouraging personal growth, stirring strong feelings, and pushing limits—all of which perfectly resonate with CUPRA’s core values.
The Terramar, named after a historic race track in Barcelona known as Autódromo de Sitges-Terramar, is CUPRA’s venture into the expanding market of sports-oriented SUVs. This vehicle offers the combined advantages of sports utility vehicles, such as practicality and everyday usability, along with performance and an engaging driving experience. Various engine options are offered, including gasoline-only “TSI” with a 265 horsepower output through a seven-speed dual clutch DSG transmission, as well as a mild-hybrid “eTSI” option that combines a 48V lithium-ion battery and a 1.5L engine for 150 horsepower. The top-tier plug-in “eHybrid” model boasts a larger battery pack, capable of delivering up to 272 horsepower. Remarkably, the eHybrid can travel over 100 km (62 miles) using only its battery power; an impressive feat as other models in this category typically manage around 30 miles on battery alone.
In terms of aesthetics, the CUPRA showcases design elements inspired by the sports car sector, most notably its assertive front end. The prominent front intake grille takes center stage on the façade, accompanied by an elevated headlight strip and a deep chin that fully encompasses the front bumper bar. Wide side intakes integrated into the front bumper also enhance the vehicle’s aggressive look. A lightbar stretches across the rear hatch, complementing the protruding rear diffuser. Additional design features include a roof spoiler, bulging fenders, and lines along the wheel arch and side skirts that add to the Terramar’s bold styling. For those seeking enhanced performance, optional 20” wheels and Akebono six-piston brakes are available.
Inside, the design language of the CUPRA Terramar blends practicality and sports even further. Deeply-bolstered front seats help during sharp cornering, while also providing the optimal seating position for both driver and passenger. CUPRA logos, embossed leather trimmings, a mix of metallics and more align with modern designs. The Terramar also features a 12-speaker high-fidelity audio system, in collaboration with Sennheiser for incredible sound.
