As a hardcore gamer and anime enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say the recent video featuring Iñaki Godoy and Xolo Maridueña from Cobra Kai and One Piece sets has left me buzzing with anticipation. The sibling vibes between these two are palpable, and if rumors are to be believed, they might just fight alongside each other in the high seas of One Piece!
Worlds collided recently when fans waiting for the final episodes of Cobra Kai were able enjoy a video alongside those waiting for One Piece Season 2. Iñaki Godoy dropped by the set of the The Karate Kid tie-in series to hang out with Xolo Maridueña and learn the ropes of what all goes into the intense fight scenes the show pulled off. It’s a great video, but if Netflix is trying to throw people off the rumor that Maridueña is joining the cast of One Piece in Season 2, this isn’t helping.
In Iñaki Godoy’s portrayal of Luffy in some key scenes from “Cobra Kai”, you can sense a powerful energy emanating from him. Interestingly, Xolo Maridueña manages to keep pace with Godoy’s energy, making them look like they could be real-life brothers if not for the knowledge that they are not. Take a moment to appreciate the brotherly bond between these two actors and how it might influence the ongoing speculation about Maridueña potentially joining “One Piece”.
There seems to be a strong implication in this video that fans are expressing a wish to see Xolo Maridueña and another character fight together in a series, and it appears there could be a chance that this might become reality. Recently, a friend of Xolo Maridueña was on a podcast, and although nothing has been officially confirmed yet, he may have hinted that the Cobra Kai star will portray Luffy’s brother, Portgas D. Ace.
I could see this being an issue.
The addition of Xolo Maridueña portraying Ace is yet another impressive casting decision for One Piece, a show that has already excelled in its second season with the recruitment of David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3 and Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha, following the cancellation of Jamie Lee Curtis’ involvement. Although Ace doesn’t feature as prominently in this part of One Piece as other Straw Hat Pirates, his importance to the storyline cannot be overstated, and he is expected to take on a more significant role in future seasons if Netflix decides to continue producing the series.
Possible explanations for Netflix keeping Xolo Maridueña’s role under wraps could be: a) They plan to unveil it at a future convention, or b) They want to save the surprise until Season 2 is released. Given that Ace is not a central figure in most of the story and makes only brief appearances before embarking on his own journey, it’s plausible that Netflix may not want to disclose his involvement now, as some viewers might expect him to appear more frequently during the season than he actually does.
Having watched both series through my Netflix membership, I’m eagerly anticipating an announcement about the casting before it takes too long. Additionally, it would be great if we heard that Jacob Bertrand, who plays Hawk, will also join the cast, given his recent excitement about being a fan of One Piece. In truth, bringing in the entire cast of Cobra Kai could be a fantastic idea, especially since their show is wrapping up production soon.
