As a lifelong fan of horror films and the Halloween season, I must admit that my expectations for Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights 2024 were sky-high. However, none of the houses compared to the unexpected delight that was the “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” attraction.
Each year, I eagerly anticipate celebrating the chilling season by attending Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights event. As a devotee of horror films, I always enjoy being fully engrossed in the genre as I move from one house to another – many of which are typically inspired by popular franchises. This year, I was thrilled to discover that Ghostbusters would be included among the Halloween Horror Nights 2024 houses in Hollywood. To my surprise, however, experiencing the Frozen Empire house turned out to be one of my most cherished memories from the night.
I Was Skeptical Of The The Frozen Empire Haunted House
Undeniably, I’ve always held a soft spot for the Ghostbusters films since my childhood. The series as a whole offers an enjoyable experience when it comes to blending supernatural tales with humor and a family-friendly approach in popular culture. When Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire graced theaters earlier this year, I didn’t make a special trip to catch it on the big screen, but had a delightful time revisiting it with my family during the summer instead.
I appreciated it significantly more than “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, primarily due to the characters returning to New York City and its antagonist. While I wasn’t as critical as some reviewers were, my feelings toward it align more with our own “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” review. To be frank, when the franchise was announced for Horror Nights, I had mixed feelings about it.
It seems to me every year, Horror Nights creates a light-hearted house to balance out the intensity of the others. From the get-go, it was evident that “Frozen Empire” would fill that role for this season, and I eagerly anticipated visiting it. However, I assumed it would be an easy stroll through. In all honesty, I wasn’t convinced about the necessity of featuring the new movie as the “Ghostbusters” house. To my delight, I was proven wrong!
The Ghostbusters Attraction Ended Up Being A Horror Nights Highlight
I’m delighted to admit I was mistaken! The Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire house turned out to be fantastic! In fact, it ranked high among the Halloween Horror Nights houses this year at Universal Studios Hollywood. Here’s what truly impressed me: it managed to be both fun and terrifying, which, in my view, makes for the best haunted houses Universal has to offer.
Garraka was quite intimidating in the film, but the costume actors portraying him certainly gave me quite a fright on several occasions as I navigated through the house. The house itself did an impressive job of establishing the plot for Frozen Empire, with its initial display of frozen people and numerous scenes reminiscent of the movie that made me reevaluate my initial feelings about it, ultimately leading to a more favorable view than I had anticipated.
As a dedicated fan, I must confess, it was one of those houses that left me utterly spellbound with its sheer coolness at every turn. The eerie presence of ghosts hailing from the lab in Frozen Empire sent chills down my spine, but not without a sprinkle of nostalgia thanks to delightful nods to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Slimer. By the time I stepped out of that house, I was left with an adrenaline rush from the scares and a heart full of admiration for the meticulous love and care poured into every detail.
It even made me want to go back and watch the movie during Halloween season and appreciate it more for all its fun moments! You can see the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire haunted house right now at Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando now through November 3.
