Jean Smart’s Response To Landing The SNL Guest Gig Is Lovely (And I Wish All Stars Were This Enthusiastic)

As a longtime fan of comedy and television, I couldn’t be more thrilled to witness the start of Saturday Night Live’s historic Season 50! The lineup of hosts and musical guests is nothing short of stellar, but it’s the choice of Jean Smart as the debut host that truly has me grinning from ear to ear.

You know what time it is when the leaves start to change and the air turns crisp: it’s time for Saturday Night Live to announce its first batch of hosts and musical guests. And they did not disappoint with the lineup of hosts and musical guests set to kick off Season 50 on the 2024 TV schedule, as Michael Keaton, Billie Eilish, John Mulaney, Chappell Roan, and more are set to appear in Studio 8H. However, the first person set to host this historic season is Jean Smart, and her enthusiastic reaction to the news is something we need more of!

Filling the role as the first host of Season 50 is quite a challenging task, but it seems Saturday Night Live made an excellent choice in selecting Jean Smart. After all, who else could be more fitting than the most recent Emmy winner for lead actress in a comedy series? In case you didn’t know, her show Hacks, which premiered its third season in May, has amassed an impressive 48 Emmy nominations. Notably, this is the third time Smart has won for her performance. As a comedy icon, she’s undeniably a perfect fit for Saturday Night Live.

So, when The Mare of Easttown actress landed the gig, she shared her enthusiastic response to the news on Instagram with the following caption:

SO EXCITED!!! Bucket list!

It’s genuinely heartwarming to observe her genuine enthusiasm. Many celebrities seem to hide their true feelings, given the harsh scrutiny of the media and public. But when it comes to something enjoyable like hosting Saturday Night Live, it’s quite impressive and significant. So, I find it refreshing to see someone as excited as Jean Smart about it.

In the world of entertainment, appearing on Saturday Night Live is often considered a significant milestone, signifying that one has truly “arrived” in their industry. However, not everyone shares the same excitement for this opportunity, as demonstrated by the Frasier actress, and I can’t help but wish more people felt the same way. For instance, I would be thrilled to see Ariana Grande (who was selected to host instead of her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, in my opinion) do more than just re-share the announcement on her story.

As a passionate gamer, I can relate – it’s always heartwarming to see our idols sharing the same level of enthusiasm as their fans. Case in point: the influx of comments on the Instagram feed of the actress from Babylon. HBO Max, where you can stream Hacks, swiftly hopped onto this trend, cleverly replying with a witty remark that had everyone laughing.

Starting the season off Smart.

Though SNL boasts an impressive lineup of guest stars that both fans and hosts are thrilled about, the show itself undergoes significant changes behind the scenes this season. A beloved cast member, Chloe Troast, was let go, while Molly Kearney and Punkie Johnson also bid farewell to the series. With the addition of three newcomers like Gen Z Tik Tok comedian Jane Wickline, there’s bound to be some adaptation as these fresh faces join the team.

Without a doubt, they’ll excel at it, and I’m thrilled about Maya Rudolph reprising her role as Vice President Kamala Harris. With all the election-related headlines this summer, I imagine the writers are working tirelessly. I can only hope that, along with Rudolph, Kate McKinnon will also appear in a political cold open to kick off the new season. I’m certain she’d be up for it!

As SNL gets ready for its grand comeback, here are some of Jean Smart’s standout roles to remind you why she’s an ideal choice to kick off this momentous season. And let me tell you, she’s just as excited about it as we are! This added enthusiasm only serves to heighten the anticipation.

On September 28th, catch her first appearance on SNL! You can tune in to NBC at 11:30 PM Eastern Time, or if you have a Peacock subscription, you’re all set!
