As a long-time fan of The Walking Dead franchise, I must say that these latest developments have truly revitalized my love for this post-apocalyptic world. The shift in location and characters has breathed fresh air into the series, making it feel like a whole new adventure rather than just another season.
The Walking Dead is dead. Long live The Walking Dead!
Even though the main series of “The Walking Dead” aired its last episode in November 2022, the franchise continues to thrive with numerous spinoff shows. Currently, there are multiple iterations of “The Walking Dead” that are active, and rumors suggest that more installments inspired by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s acclaimed comic books are under development. Here’s a rundown of what’s currently airing, what’s upcoming, and what has been announced so far.
This story originally posted October 2023 and will be updated.
‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ and ‘The Book of Carol’
Initially, the spin-off show titled “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” was intended to feature Melissa McBride as Carol, a character often compared to Sarah Connor in the “Walking Dead” universe. However, McBride decided to step away from the world of walkers and didn’t appear in the first season of “Daryl Dixon“. But now, she’s returning for season two, and even more excitingly, the series will be titled “The Book of Carol” for this new season, as announced by AMC.
In the debut of “Daryl Dixon”, we followed the titular character’s journey from America, right through to France. The show incorporated French imagery such as a fight sequence by the Eiffel Tower and cleverly used the Paris Catacombs to differentiate this part of the zombie apocalypse from its American equivalent. In season two, Carol is introduced, seemingly to bring Daryl back home, but it seems more likely that she’ll embark on numerous European adventures with her post-apocalyptic pal instead. (Their friendship bracelets make them adorable!) The second season was filmed in Europe due to an agreement between AMC and SAG-AFTRA, and is scheduled to air September 29, 2024. Notably, the series has already been renewed for a third season, with filming set to take place in Spain.
‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’
TOWeL” (though not universally recognized, it’s certainly known as such by myself and my fellow podcast colleagues for “The Walking Dead”), we have “The Ones Who Live.” This limited series focuses on the highly anticipated reunion of two key figures from the entire saga: Rick Grimes and Michonne, portrayed by Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira. Originally planned as a series of films, their story was instead adapted for a limited series release in February 2024. The conclusion (beware of spoilers) left fans wondering where the franchise might head next.
Titled “The Ones Who Live,” this spinoff series derives its name from a saying that served as a source of hope among the central characters during the bleakest times in “The Walking Dead.” With Terry O’Quinn joining the cast as the antagonist Beale, the team faces numerous challenges in their self-contained storyline. Pollyanna McIntosh reprises her role as Jadis from season 9, a character who not only saved Rick’s life but also made an appearance in “The Walking Dead: World Beyond.” Interestingly, Jadis is now one of only three main characters to appear across three different “Walking Dead” spinoffs, sharing this distinction with none other than Rick and another active series cast member.
‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 2
AMC made a significant move with its first major spin-off series based on the success of “The Walking Dead.” This show features Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the baseball bat-wielding character Negan, who was once a villain but has reformed, and Lauren Cohan as Maggie Rhee, also known as “The Widow.” In this series, titled “The Walking Dead: Dead City“, the characters of Negan and Maggie travel through Manhattan in an attempt to rescue Maggie’s son from a dangerous adversary called The Croat (Zeljko Ivanek), who is known for his menacing performances.
Dead City demonstrated that there was still life within the The Walking Dead universe after the flagship’s conclusion. The new setting was effective, though locals might notice some scenes were filmed in New Jersey instead of New York. Reviving two old characters with a long history together paved the way for a fresh narrative with deep roots. The series was given a second season in July 2023, set to air in 2025.
‘Fear the Walking Dead’: The Final Season
In 2023, after eight seasons, the first spinoff of the Walking Dead franchise, Fear the Walking Dead, aired its last six episodes. This marked the conclusion of Fear the Walking Dead. The initial half of season eight saw the exit of Morgan Jones, portrayed by veteran actor Lennie James in both Fear and the main series, The Walking Dead. With his storyline finished, the final six episodes wrapped up the narrative of Madison Clark (played by Kim Dickens), the original protagonist of the series, who appeared to have been killed off in season four, but surprisingly returned at the end of season seven.
In the concluding episodes, focus shifts significantly onto the character of Madison, providing an opportunity to conclude her storyline as it was established during the first three seasons by co-creator and original showrunner Dave Erickson. This includes Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), whose future is uncertain after leaving the series in season seven, Madison’s daughter; Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades), one of Madison’s earliest allies; and Victor Strand (Colman Domingo), who has been noticeably absent from the current storyline, having adopted a more villainous role in season seven.
‘Tales of the Walking Dead’ and ‘More Tales From the Walking Dead Universe’
The anthology series “Tales of the Walking Dead” provided some exceptional stories set within AMC’s zombie universe in quite some time. However, the six standalone episodes that aired from August to September 2022 haven’t had any subsequent action yet. Excitingly, AMC has announced plans for a series of short films called “More Tales From the Walking Dead Universe,” which seems to be a continuation of the same concept and title as “Tales.” As of now, no release date has been set for these shorts. If one of these episodes doesn’t feature an alternate universe where Rick Grimes wields a lightsaber and fights aliens (yes, it’s true!), then what’s the point?
