Young Sheldon Stars Open Up About Being A 'Little Bit Ham' Switching To A Live Audience For The New Spinoff

As a long-time fan of The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia upon hearing about Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Having grown up with these characters, it’s fascinating to see how they’ve evolved from the single-cam comedy format of Young Sheldon to the multi-cam sitcom style that made Big Bang Theory a household name.

As the days tick by, we’re eagerly anticipating the premiere of “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” on CBS in 2024, which serves as a sequel to “Young Sheldon“. Notably, this spin-off is not just a continuation of the previous series, but will adopt a multi-camera format with a live studio audience like “The Big Bang Theory“, marking a significant shift for the cast members of “Young Sheldon“, including Montana Jordan, Emily Osment, Rachel Bay Jones, and Will Sasso. The actors have discussed this change, expressing their excitement about being able to play their characters with a bit more flair this time around, referring to it as an opportunity to be “a little bit ham”.

The storyline “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” primarily revolves around the two main characters as they strive for tranquility residing under the roof of Mandy’s parents, Audrey (played by Rachel Bay Jones) and Jim (Will Sasso), along with their daughter CeeCee, following George Sr.’s demise. During CBS’ Fall 2024 Virtual Press Day, I inquired about the actors’ experiences shifting from portraying their characters on a single-camera comedy to a multi-camera setup with a live audience. Montana Jordan, reprising his role as Georgie, shared:

In the show Young Sheldon, we often find Georgie, the younger sibling, constantly engaging in various activities. Whether it’s selling candies or involving himself in other money-making schemes, or causing mischief with the girls, he’s always up to something. However, in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, these specific antics won’t be shown, but rest assured, Georgie will still be keeping busy. He has a multitude of things happening in his life, offering plenty for viewers to follow. Now that he’s a father and his own father has passed away, he finds himself shouldering more responsibilities as the head of the household. There’s a wealth of story yet to be unfolded.

It’s great to know that he won’t be involved with girls since he’s now married to Mandy and they have a child together. Financial challenges might arise for the newlyweds, but on the television show “Young Sheldon,” such situations are often used for humor rather than intense drama. In real life, this could be the case in episodes that can be watched with a Paramount+ subscription.

Rachel Bay Jones commended Montana Jordan for his lively performance during the show, describing him as being somewhat “theatrical” or “exhibiting a flair for drama.

It was really fun to watch Montana, and it has been really fun to watch Montana especially grow in front of the audience, and really to see him enjoy that and be a little bit of a ham in front of the audience. It’s been really fabulous. He’s so so good, and it’s really fun. We’re all getting a big kick out of watching him.

It seems reasonable to conclude that the actors on “The Big Bang Theory” tended to be more exaggerated, perhaps because they were acting before a live studio audience rather than a single-camera setup, as opposed to their performances in “Young Sheldon” over the years. Will Sasso concurred with this assessment and added:

It’s truly enlightening, especially for a fan of Young Sheldon, to witness Georgie seamlessly blend into Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage while still retaining his unique charm. As Steve [Holland] pointed out, this series doesn’t require you to be a regular viewer. Although it belongs to the Big Bang universe, it’s not like a Marvel movie in terms of continuity. [laughs] Nonetheless, it’s delightful to see Montana preserve Georgie’s essence as he navigates the multi-camera medium, an aspect I eagerly anticipate viewers will appreciate.

As a devoted fan, let me assure you that the television universe initiated by The Big Bang Theory and further expanded by Young Sheldon (both available now with a Max subscription) isn’t transforming into something akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the introduction of Georgie & Mandy. It’s important to mention that Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory had simultaneous airings for several years, but this won’t be the case for G&M following the conclusion of Iain Armitage’s show in the spring. Emily Osment, who shares the lead role with Montana Jordan as Mandy, has even chimed in on this:

This universe they’ve constructed is incredibly resilient, as demonstrated by the fact that it has transitioned from multiple cameras to a single one, and then back again to multiple cameras. It underscores the depth and authenticity of these characters, proving that they can captivate audiences regardless of changes in camera angles or positions.

As a devoted fan, I can confidently say that the creative geniuses who brought “Young Sheldon” and “Big Bang Theory” to life are continuing to expand the universe they’ve so skillfully crafted. The remarkable trio of Steve Holland, Steven Molaro, and Chuck Lorre served as executive producers on both shows even before “Georgie & Mandy” was just a twinkle in someone’s imagination. During CBS’ Fall 2024 Press Day, the talented Mr. Holland shared his thoughts, and I can still hear him saying, in his closing remarks, that this new series is an exciting extension of their already impressive body of work.

If you’re a fan of Young Sheldon or Big Bang Theory, particularly of Young Sheldon, I believe this new show will feel both enjoyable and comfortably familiar. It’s essentially the same Young Sheldon, just presented in a fresh format, but rest assured all the elements that made it beloved are still intact. Our enthusiasm for producing this came from our confidence in the talented cast we assembled, whom we were eager to showcase each week on stage, and let me tell you, it’s been an absolute delight! It’s a joy to watch, and I think the episodes have turned out exceptionally well. We can’t wait to share them with the world.

Good news for fans who have been yearning for more of the Cooper family, following the end of Young Sheldon in May – the wait for the new sitcom, titled Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, won’t be much longer. The show will make its debut on Thursday, October 17 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Unlike Young Sheldon, where the entire Cooper family was a prominent feature, this time around, you can anticipate seeing Zoe Perry as Mary and Annie Potts as MeeMaw in the series premiere.
