As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless franchises, I must say that the return to Night City with this new Cyberpunk animated series is nothing short of exhilarating. Having had the privilege of diving into the gritty world of Edgerunners myself, I can attest to the fact that it’s not just a mere video game adaptation – it’s a masterpiece that transcends its original medium.
CD Projekt Red is heading back to the world of Night City, this time working on a new animated project within the Cyberpunk universe, which was announced during Geeked Week. The developers are teaming up again with the world’s most popular streaming platform to produce an animated series, taking place in the same universe as the beloved “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.” This spin-off is based on the blockbuster video game, “Cyberpunk 2077,” where body modifications have become commonplace in fashion, reflecting power and social status. The elite of the major corporations enjoy a lavish lifestyle while the hired mercenaries, referred to as Edgerunners, live in poverty, resorting to risky illegal body enhancements.
The news arrives only a handful of weeks following when representatives from CD Projekt Red disclosed that they’re developing additional animated projects set within the Cyberpunk universe. Michael Nowakowski, co-CEO at CD Projekt Red, made this statement:
Absolutely, we have plans to expand our animation work within the Cyberpunk universe. I can confirm that there will be more animations coming up, but I’m unable to reveal any additional details at this time.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Is One of the Best Video Game Adaptations of All Time
Initially, Cyberpunk 2077 was planned to be a groundbreaking addition to the gaming world. The creators of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt were transitioning from fantasy to science fiction, crafting an innovative narrative set in a universe influenced by William Gibson’s Neuromancer. Unfortunately, numerous bugs and playability issues marred the game’s initial launch. However, the arrival of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners proved to be the salvation the franchise needed, providing the much-needed momentum.
The ten-episode series chronicled the life of David, a street-dwelling youth in Night City, who stumbled upon an extraordinarily potent, military-grade enhancement for his body. After being expelled from school, David utilized this mod to ascend as an Edgerunner, establishing himself within Night City’s clandestine criminal organizations. The series was widely acclaimed by both critics and viewers, leaving a lasting impact with its heartrending finale. Not only did the anime breathe new life into the player base of Cyberpunk 2077, but it also provided the game with the boost it required after numerous updates and extra DLC content. Furthermore, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners secured the prestigious CrunchyRoll Anime of the Year Award, which is akin to the Emmys in the anime world.
