Mehcad Brooks Shares How Law And Order Will Feel 'Updated' This Fall, And I Can't Wait To See The Season 24 Changes

As a dedicated fan of Law & Order since its early days, I must say I’m excited about the upcoming Season 24. The new dynamic between Mehcad Brooks, Reid Scott, and Maura Tierney sounds intriguing, like a modern-day Three Stooges on set!

In the coming years on television, Law & Order is scheduled to make a comeback for its 24th season in 2024, following the exit of series regular Camryn Manheim. The rest of the detectives and lawyers from NBC’s longstanding drama should carry on with their usual work, though there may be some minor alterations… mostly. As mentioned by Mehcad Brooks, however, one key aspect will undergo an update when the new season starts this fall, and he hinted at what will be modified for a fresh take.

I recently had a chat with Mehcad Brooks, an actor known for playing multiple characters in the series, before the upcoming season of Law & Order. He mentioned an intriguing “Three Stooges” dynamic on set among him, Reid Scott, and newcomer Maura Tierney for Season 24. When asked about the camaraderie between takes in a show known for its heavy and serious tone, Brooks explained:

It seems inevitable, doesn’t it? You find yourself rising as early as 5:30 and 6:00 AM, and by 8:00, you’re discussing subjects like death, crime, and the gloomiest aspects of human nature. Through my work with soldiers and law enforcement, I’ve discovered that they often possess a unique, dark sense of humor – it’s a coping mechanism, a way to find lightness in difficult situations. We strive to share this off-camera, and occasionally, on air too.

Although Law & Order might not be the most humorous primetime series, the cast still manages to chuckle behind the scenes. As Mehcad Brooks shares, there’s an intention to infuse humor into scenes that make it to the episodes broadcasted on NBC and available for streaming via Peacock subscriptions. This playful touch will be noticeable in Season 24.

Indeed, when Law & Order comes back this fall, there will be a shift towards a lighter atmosphere. Rest assured, there won’t be any laughter tracks involved, but the series is venturing into new territories with regards to its tone. Brooks has hinted at these changes in an interview.

This year, they’re giving the series a fresh twist, moving away from the traditional stoicism that Law & Order has been known for. There’s still a strong resemblance to its original essence, I should clarify, but it also feels modernized and unique. It’s not transforming the show into something unfamiliar, but there are definitely some humorous buddy moments included.

Rest assured, long-term fans – Season 24 will continue to embody the familiar Law & Order you cherish, but with some added lighter scenes amidst the usual crime and tragedy. This seems like a great addition for the 8 p.m. ET show launching NBC’s Thursday night schedule. Moreover, it’s impressive that even at Season 24, the series is still evolving, reflecting its resilience and adaptability.

In its revived Season 21, which premiered in 2022, after a hiatus of nearly twelve years since its previous cancellation, Law & Order had to adjust to the current times. I’m excited to see how they blend “comic relief scenes” while maintaining the essence – as Mehcad Brooks described it – of the show’s original characteristics when Season 24 airs.

This autumn, there will be some modifications in the lineup of the popular series “Law & Order”. While “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” continue to air at their usual 8 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET time slots on NBC Thursdays, “Law & Order: Organized Crime” has been renewed for a fifth season. Instead of being broadcast at 10 p.m. ET following “SVU”, the new season will be exclusively available on Peacock streaming service.

Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 doesn’t yet have a Peacock premiere date, but filming has begun. As for Law & Order and SVU, both shows return to NBC on Thursday, October 3. Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s Found will premiere its second season at 10 p.m. ET that night.
