As a lifelong movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours analyzing and appreciating the works of various directors, I find myself deeply moved by Josh Cooley’s gracious response to Quentin Tarantino‘s opinion on Toy Story 4. The director’s humility and understanding are truly commendable, especially in a world where such public criticisms can often lead to heated debates and unnecessary feuds.
Quentin Tarantino, renowned as one of today’s top filmmakers, often garners attention when expressing his views on movies. Recently, he expressed his lack of interest in watching Toy Story 4 and has no plans to do so. Given that Josh Cooley, the director of Toy Story 4, has now released Transformers One, it’s natural that he would be questioned about Tarantino’s viral comments.
Personally, I admire how Josh Cooley managed that situation. When queried about Quentin Tarantino’s opinion being questionable regarding the 2019 film “Toy Story 4“, this was the director’s response:
He can do whatever he wants, honestly. I heard that interview. He’s Tarantino. And I love he’s so passionate about everything, and he’s so passionate about for him that trilogy works. Great.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cooley appeared unfazed by the legendary director’s opinions. He expressed delight over the director’s admiration for the original trilogy of films, but showed no urgency in persuading the filmmaker to watch the latest sequel. As he went on:
I don’t want to have to convince him to see it. If he doesn’t want to see it, he doesn’t have to.
In August, Quentin Tarantino expressed high praise for the Toy Story movies, particularly Toy Story 3, calling it “magnificent” and one of the best films he had ever seen. He even declared it the top film of 2010 in his year-end ranking, with The Social Network at No. 2 and Animal Kingdom in third place. Interestingly, Tarantino also appreciated Tangled enough to give it fifth place in his list.
Regarding “Toy Story 4”, it’s clear that Josh Cooley can boast about its impressive box office performance, raking in $1.07 billion globally and garnering favorable feedback from both critics and viewers. Tarantino raises a valid question about whether another “Toy Story” was necessary following the third movie’s conclusive ending, where Andy bid farewell to his toys as he headed off to college, passing them on to a new player.
Interestingly, it was advertised as the final installment of the Toy Story series before another film was revealed, which garnered a range of reactions. The fifth movie in the franchise is set to release in summer 2026, featuring our beloved toys contending with the appeal of electronics and technology among today’s children. I’m guessing Tarantino won’t be eagerly awaiting this one either.
