One-Of-A-Kind F.P.Journe Élégante Becomes the Most Expensive Quartz Wristwatch Sold at an Auction

As a seasoned watch collector and connoisseur of art, I find myself constantly in awe of the extraordinary creations that push the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship. The recent auction of the F.P. Journe Élégante not only set a new world record for the most expensive quartz wristwatch but also served as a testament to the fusion of art and watchmaking excellence.

A new world record was set at a fundraiser in Geneva last week, with a unique F.P.Journe Élégante becoming the most expensive quartz wristwatch to ever be sold at an auction. Presented by Philips in Association and Bacs & Russo, the timepiece was specially crafted to honor the 30th anniversary of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Geneva (MAMCO).

Enclosed within a Titalyt®-coated titanium casing, the 48mm watch maintains a gray-toned aesthetic across its case, dial, and strap. The watch face highlights interwoven letters: an ‘A’ in red, an ‘R’ in blue, and a ‘T’ in yellow. Although the word “ART” might initially appear to be a reference to MAMCO being an art museum, it also symbolizes F.P. Journe’s fundamental principles, representing authenticity, rarity, and skill.

At the core of this luxury watch lies an advanced quartz mechanism, designed right within the independent watch studio. This unique piece mirrors the 18k rose gold movements seen in the watchmaker’s mechanical designs by featuring a rose gold circuitry.

A one-of-a-kind F.P. Journe watch was purchased for 470,000 Swiss Francs (around $552,359 USD) by a global collector and benefactor. The entire sale price was donated to finance the renovation of MAMCO.
