As a long-time gamer and storyteller at heart, I must say that Meryl Streep‘s new PSA is nothing short of inspiring. The way she weaves together our love for entertainment with the urgency of addressing climate change is truly brilliant.
Meryl Streep is lending her voice to the climate change crisis — literally.
The award-winning legend lends her voice to “Wish to Share an Incredible Tale,” a fresh public service announcement that was unveiled today, jointly produced by the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance and the NRDC’s Rewrite the Future project.
“Hi there! Fancy taking a look at a tale about global warming?” Streep hints in the initial moments, as follows a rapid sequence of scenes from Get Out, The Lego Movie, and Anchorman, where characters respond with a firm ‘no’. “We understand if you’re hesitant – climate change is indeed daunting. It might even stir up some unease. Naturally, we often seek solace in movies and TV. But suppose we rephrase the question?
Streep effectively rephrases her statement as follows: “Would you like to watch an outstanding tale? Tales can simultaneously captivate while addressing climate issues. They could be dramatic, comedic, or stories of bravery; tales about safeguarding what matters most, or a journey filled with adventure – the theme of our era is climate change, and it’s being narrated today in small, relatable instances as well as globally impactful events that are resonating with viewers worldwide.
As a gamer, I find myself immersed in a captivating Public Service Announcement (PSA) filled with memorable scenes from various movies and TV shows. This PSA is layered with conversations and visuals about climate change and the environment. Some of the titles you might recognize include The Day After Tomorrow, Don’t Look Up, Free Willy, Avatar, Red Notice, Mad Max: Fury Road, 30 Rock, Jurassic World Dominion, The Last of Us, The Office, Big Little Lies, Deepwater Horizon, Moana, Interstellar, The Crown, Beatriz at Dinner, My Octopus Teacher, Extrapolations, Dune, Ted Lasso, 3 Body Problem, Outer Banks, Wednesday, Abbott Elementary, Peter Rabbit 2, Black Panther, Avatar: The Way of the Water, The Biggest Little Farm, Nomadland, Parasite, Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Aquaman, Wall-E, Okja, The Climb, Beats of the Southern Wild, The Good Place and many more. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of our planet and the roles these stories play in raising awareness about environmental issues.
In conclusion, Streep poses, “Would you like to share an exceptional tale?” guiding spectators towards ClimateOnScreen.org, a platform that unites climate issues with compelling narratives. The video also includes the Coldplay song “Adventure of a Lifetime,” and the complete version can be accessed via the link provided above.
The Sustainable Entertainment Alliance, previously known as the Sustainable Production Alliance, is a collaborative effort among film, television, and streaming companies aiming to foster an eco-friendly industry via both on-screen and off-screen practices. Participants include A24, Amazon Studios, Amblin Partners, Disney, Fox Corporation, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Village Roadshow, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The alliance is currently working towards growth by providing resources and chances for the industry to engage with sustainability issues on-screen. Originally, they established guidelines for sustainable production through their Green Production Guide.
Sam Read, executive director of the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance, expresses eagerness about investigating methods to fulfill audience’s appetite for narratives that interact with our evolving climate and help steer the industry towards a greener future, in terms of both on-screen and off-screen practices,” says the statement.
Daniel Hinerfeld, director of NRDC’s Rewrite the Future, remarks: “Storytellers are forging the path by producing acclaimed films and TV shows that address environmental concerns, striking a chord with viewers. While not every tale needs to focus on climate change, merely acknowledging that we inhabit a world altered by climate can make any narrative more relatable and captivating.
