Power Rangers Fans Get Surprising New Look at Canceled Animated Movie

As a lifelong fan of the Power Rangers, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and disappointment upon seeing these resurfaced posters for the animated movie that never was. Growing up with the original series, it’s hard not to wonder what could have been if this project had come to fruition.

Back in 2015, there were plans for a reboot of the Power Rangers as an animated film. Although this project was eventually scrapped, recently some official posters for what appeared to be called “Power Rangers: The Animated Movie” have surfaced online. These posters are bound to stir excitement among fans who might find themselves yelling “It’s Morphing Time!” with emotional voices. Take a look at the posters below and ponder why an animated Power Rangers movie or series still hasn’t materialized…

Posters distributed by X or Twitter user @Jinsakuu have reappeared, accompanied by a sneak peek of the upcoming Power Rangers animated film trailer. This illustrates effectively how this cherished franchise could be adapted for an animated series.

The animated film titled “Power Rangers” (originally known as “Power Rangers: Origins” and “Power Rangers 3D”), was set to transform the classic ’90s live-action series into computer-generated imagery (CGI). Developed by Saban Brands, ZAG Inc., and Onyx Films, this project was shrouded in secrecy. It was said to have focused on the original team: Jason Lee Scott, Billy Cranston, Kimberly Ann Hart, Trini Kwan, and Zack Taylor, revisiting their origins as they evolved into the Power Rangers.

Originally, it seemed that the new, animated Power Rangers series was going to be unveiled as part of a fresh franchise. But instead, producers decided to create a live-action film for the big screen, which debuted in 2017. This decision put the production of the animated reboot on hold.

What’s Next for the Power Rangers Franchise?

The “Power Rangers” series originated in 1993 through “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” where it introduced us to a team of teenagers from Angel Grove, California, who were chosen by the extraterrestrial Zordon to safeguard Earth from different villains while assuming the roles of the renowned Power Rangers. This show combined martial arts, high school life drama, and giant robots, eventually skyrocketing in popularity worldwide. Over time, it has branched out into various spin-offs, movies, comics, video games, and numerous other mediums.

2017 saw the release of a movie that aimed to reboot the series and kickstart a new franchise. Unfortunately, it received mixed criticism from critics and underperformed at the box office, effectively putting an end to any plans for a sequel featuring Tommy Oliver as the famous Green Ranger character.

It appears that the latest news about a fresh journey in the Power Rangers universe was a live-action series slated for Netflix. Regrettably, this project seems to have stalled, as Hasbro Entertainment is now seeking a different collaborator to take over and continue developing it. The Netflix series had been under development for quite some time, with Jessica Jones producer and Supernatural scriptwriter Jenny Klein serving as the showrunner. The production of the series was being done in cooperation with Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World, next year’s Karate Kid film), who aimed to create a new franchise based on this concept.
