Laapataa Ladies: Chhaya Kadam aka Manju Mai breaks silence on ongoing controversy about no-women jury for Oscars 2025; ‘Film samajhna zyaada…’

As a seasoned actress who has navigated the intricate labyrinth of Bollywood for decades, I find myself deeply moved by Chhaya Kadam’s eloquent and insightful words on the selection process for films like Laapataa Ladies. Her unwavering belief in the power of connoisseurs, regardless of gender, resonates profoundly with my own experiences in this industry.

Controversy erupted over Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies not having women on the selection jury for the Oscars 2025. This led to numerous online criticisms, with users calling out The Film Federation of India for their description of Indian women as a ‘puzzling blend of submissiveness and dominance.’ In response, Chhaya Kadam emphasized that true connoisseurs should be the ones making these selections.

In a recent chat with News 18 Showsha, Chhaya Kadam expressed a straightforward viewpoint: “We’re movie enthusiasts.” She emphasized that it matters not whether they are male or female, as long as film connoisseurs make these selections. Understanding films is crucial and nothing is more important than that, she asserted.

As a passionate follower, I couldn’t help but express my joy when I learned that the Magdaon Express, featuring Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Nitanshi Goel, has been chosen as India’s submission for the 97th Academy Awards. I can hardly contain my excitement over this prestigious honor, knowing that it will open doors for more people to appreciate this wonderful production.

“But yes, I truly believe that Laapataa Ladies ko Oscar milna chahiye aur andar se lag raha hai ki aisa hi hoga(LL should be honored with Oscar, and I have a gut feeling that it will happen).”

It’s noteworthy that Laapataa Ladies stood out among 29 movies on the list. Competing with it were also Chhaya’s All We Imagine As Light, but unfortunately, it didn’t make the final selection. The veteran actress, in response, considered both films as her children and expressed equal excitement for both. However, she was confident that her film which won at Cannes would secure a spot at the Oscars.

She went on to emphasize that the director of All We Imagine As Light, Payal Kapadia, stands out as unique. Additionally, she extended her congratulations to the directorial team led by Kiran Rao.

In 2023, Laapataa Ladies, produced under Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, made its debut at the esteemed Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film received a standing ovation from the festival’s audience. Subsequently, it was screened in cinemas before being made available on Netflix.
