Johnny Depp, Riccardo Scamarcio and the Cast of ‘Modi’ Stir Up San Sebastian Film Festival

As a longtime fan of Johnny Depp and his captivating performances, seeing him take the director’s seat for “Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness” is nothing short of exhilarating! His portrayal of Amedeo Modigliani in this film is sure to be a masterpiece, given Depp’s knack for immersing himself into the soul of his characters.

On Tuesday evening, the cast of Johnny Depp’s film titled “Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness” walked the red carpet at San Sebastian, marking the start of the second directorial project for the movie star.

Johnny Depp was praised by the audience just before the movie started, and then he was joined at the Kursaal Theater on Spain’s northern coast for the global debut of “Modi” by Riccardo Scamarcio and Antonia Desplat. This film chronicles three days in the life of the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

Additionally, featuring Stephen Graham, Bruno Gouery, Luisa Ranieri, Ryan McParland, and Al Pacino portraying art collector Maurice Gangnat, the movie unfolds in Paris during World War II, where a painter and sculptor seeks acclaim. Scamarcio takes on the main role, with Desplat playing Beatrice Hustings, Modigliani’s partner for two years.

Journalists seemed excited to see Johnny Depp at the press conference held earlier today, although The Hollywood Reporter has learned that twelve foreign reporters decided not to attend a scheduled event with Depp and the rest of the cast due to difficulties regarding access to the film’s director.

At the press conference, Depp compared his tumultuous life to that of Modigliani, citing the legal turmoil and defamation trial following his high-profile breakup with actress Amber Heard: “I think it’s safe to say I’ve experienced a few challenges. Perhaps your experiences didn’t become a television drama,” he remarked. “I’m referring to something broadcast for all to see.

In addition, it was shared that Pacino was the one who encouraged Depp to take charge of the movie, as he stated, “When Pacino talks, you pay attention.” Meanwhile, the cast expressed their sentiments to THR, stating, “Hollywood needs Johnny Depp.” Scamarcio commented on Depp’s comeback after a period of controversy in the industry, saying, “He is the kindest, most considerate, sweetest person I have ever collaborated with. The entertainment world should be cautious.

The movie titled “Modi” will premiere in Italian theaters on December 5th, but its release date in the U.S. remains undecided. This event coincides with one of San Sebastian’s most prestigious film festivals, where stars like Cate Blanchett, Javier Bardem, Andrew Garfield, and Florence Pugh will either attend or showcase their films.

Leslie Felperin, THR‘s film critic, notes in her review of Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness: “Scamarcio is almost captivating, but the storyline of Modi, focusing on a countdown over a few days as he prepares to present to renowned collector Gangnat, doesn’t delve much into what drives him or spark our interest.

San Sebastian Film Festival runs from Sept. 20-28.
