As a fan of both quality acting and sports, I was thrilled to see Patrick Schwarzenegger take on the role of Tim Tebow in American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez. Despite the small size of the role, Schwarzenegger’s approach to acting is refreshingly humble and focused on growth rather than fame.

Patrick Schwarzenegger’s unexpected and notable role as college football legend Tim Tebow in Ryan Murphy’s new project, titled “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez“, was an opportunity he welcomed. “I wished they had simply approached me and asked, ‘would you like to play Tim Tebow?’ I’m not at that level yet,” he said to The Hollywood Reporter. “It just popped up in my email as a regular audition.
Despite the minor part in the ten-episode miniseries focusing on the fallen NFL star entangled in murder and suicide, Schwarzenegger was unfazed, as he acknowledged that his method of acting deviates from that of his renowned father.
He humorously mentions that his viewpoint differs from someone, whom he doesn’t name but seems to be a well-known figure like Arnold Schwarzenegger. “He often encourages me to aim high, pursue the main roles and strive for grandeur,” he says. Instead, his own approach to acting is focused on setting personal goals. For him, it’s about constantly learning and improving as an actor. He wants to collaborate with talented individuals in the film industry, such as directors, producers, and other actors. Additionally, he aims to take on roles that are unlike anything he has done before.
He continues, discussing his role, “And for me, this hit all those different requirements. I got to work with someone like Josh [Rivera, the show’s star], who’s a very great up-and-coming actor who I think has a beautiful [career] horizon ahead.”
Additional advantages are the respect for director Murphy, known for creating “Scream Queens,” where Schwarzenegger made an appearance in 2015, as well as his entire crew. Not to mention Tim Tebow himself.
Schwarzenegger openly acknowledges being an avid Tim Tebow fan. They’ve only crossed paths once in the past, many years ago, so he clarifies they are not on a friendly terms.
Despite recognizing that “this production doesn’t primarily revolve around Tim and he merely plays a minor role in the narrative,” Schwarzenegger made it a point to learn as much as possible about Tebow’s personal history, including intriguing facts about the miracle associated with his conception and birth, as well as why the Philippines is his birthplace. He immersed himself in Tebow’s sermons, books, and interviews to accurately portray the connection between Tebon and Hernandez, who were not only former University of Florida teammates striving for victory, but also men of faith.
He expresses the desire to grasp why this person held such strong feelings towards religion, Jesus, and faith. His goal was to decipher how he spoke about Jesus, faith, and understand the nature of his bond with these concepts, in order to relay this information to Aaron.
Although there’s no proof that Tebow knew about Hernandez’s deep struggles or the full burden he carried, his readiness to aid without knowing the specifics is clearly evident. Through all his investigations, Schwarzenegger explains why Tebow “observed Aaron using drugs, partying, drinking, etc.” and “would extend a helping hand during difficult times, becoming a beacon of humanity for Aaron.” He adds that “this is the kind of leader Tim was at Florida,” demonstrating his compassionate nature.
The small but impactful role is another meaningful professional notch for Schwarzenegger. “I’m continuously making strides in my own career. The next thing with White Lotus is obviously a bigger role than this was. [The Boys spinoff] Gen V was only a couple episodes and The Staircase before that was all eight episodes. So it goes up and down,” he explains. “But I just love to be part of really great quality projects that are interesting to me, and I get to try something new [that is] a challenge for me on the acting side.”
Regarding the upcoming third season of “White Lotus,” Schwarzenegger notes with a sigh that he’s “not able to reveal much” but hints that there are “plenty of exciting aspects” and promises it will be “quite a ride.
He’s not mum about welcoming an opportunity to follow in his dad’s footsteps in one plum role, however. “Man, I would love to be Mr. Freeze,” he exclaims. “I think it’d be so fun and so cool. I have the very fondest memories of going to see my dad on set. I saw photos of him in his Mr. Freeze outfit and I think it was a hilarious movie. I always make fun of my dad for his one-liners, and especially in that movie.”
Contrary to certain internet speculations, Schwarzenegger himself has confirmed that he hasn’t discussed anything related to new projects. In his own words, “I haven’t spoken to anyone.” He currently doesn’t have any professional ties, but he expresses admiration for Matt Reeves’ work and the direction DC is taking with shows like Penguin and the upcoming The Batman featuring Robert Pattinson. If given the opportunity, it would be a fulfillment of his dreams to contribute to such projects in any way.
