As a gamer with a heart for crime dramas and a soft spot for sitcom stars turning serious, I was absolutely captivated by Kaitlin Olson‘s performance in ABC’s High Potential. The episode “Dancers in the Dark” was a rollercoaster ride of emotions that left me in awe of her dramatic prowess. Who would have thought that a member of the Always Sunny Gang for two decades could reduce us to tears on a network TV drama?
Spoilers ahead for Episode 2 of ABC’s High Potential, called “Dancers in the Dark.”
In the 2024 TV lineup, the newcomer High Potential made a promising debut among freshman series, featuring It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s and The Mick star, Kaitlin Olson. In the role of Morgan, she demonstrated a dramatic shift from her previous characters. Last week’s series premiere saw her joining the LAPD as a consultant, and in “Dancers in the Dark,” she solved her first case involving attempted murder, mistaken identity, theft, and ultimately, actual murder.
In the first episode (currently streaming on Hulu with a subscription), Morgan injected humor to prevent High Potential from feeling like another run-of-the-mill crime show. However, her dramatic performance left me quite surprised, as I hadn’t anticipated seeing such emotion from a member of the Always Sunny sitcom gang, who has been with us for almost two decades, delivering tears on a network TV drama each week.
The moment that truly highlighted Olson’s dramatic flair was toward the end of the episode, when Captain Selena, portrayed by Judy Reyes who is adored for her comedic roles alongside the Scrubs cast, unexpectedly visited Morgan’s house. While it appeared Ava was peacefully asleep, she was actually watching TV with her mother on the couch.
Selena shared some information with Morgan about Roman, her husband who vanished fifteen years ago when Ava was just an infant. The officer unexpectedly revealed a piece of news that not only sparked a glimmer of hope in Morgan (and Ava, who overheard the conversation) regarding Roman’s story, but also gave Morgan comfort knowing someone finally supported her claims. Essentially, Selena informed this new LAPD advisor:
I traced Roman’s vehicle after his disappearance. To my surprise, it was impounded by the police three days later, found abandoned in a Costco parking lot, not far from where you both resided. Among the few items discovered inside the car were diapers, raising an intriguing question: if Roman truly intended to leave his family, why would he make a detour to buy diapers? Rest assured, we’ll uncover the truth about Roman’s fate. I guarantee it.
To put it simply, I’m eager to see more interactions between Morgan and Captain Selena in future episodes! Although it appears that Morgan will mostly share screen time with her children or Daniel Sunjata’s character, Karadec, their brief conversation, which lasted only a minute but stood out in the episode for me, was truly captivating.
There are several positive indications that Morgan can comfortably adapt to her new role without undue concern for her children. In the show “Dancers in the Dark”, the plot conveniently resolved this aspect by introducing Ludo, who was tasked by the LAPD to look after the kids, as he put it, “I’m getting paid to babysit.” Given that I was excited to see more of Taran Killam from Saturday Night Live, following the series premiere, I wholeheartedly approve!
Catch Kaitlin Olson showcasing her acting prowess in the latest episodes of “High Potential” every Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. Notably, she’s still keeping her comedy roots alive, as filming for the next season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” which is slated to start once “High Potential” wraps up its first season.
