The Wire, frequently hailed as one of the best TV series ever made, presents a striking perspective on crime and law enforcement. Crafted by author and former police reporter David Simon, The Wire provides a comprehensive look at the clashes surrounding the drug trade and its far-reaching impacts on the city, as seen through the lives of those entangled in its destructive cycle. This includes police officers, drug dealers, politicians, and media figures – making it a compelling exploration of how the drug trade influences the city’s core functions.

This perspective strongly echoes the ethos of author and ‘Bosch’ series creator Michael Connelly, who described the title character as a detective who believes that “everyone matters or nothing matters.” Reminiscent of this philosophy, ‘The Wire’ embodies this idea that everyone is significant and has garnered both critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase even years after its final episode. Often lauded as one of the greatest television series, it ranks fourth on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Shows of All Time.

In addition to its intense action and emotional storylines, The Wire features a number of well-known Hollywood stars in recurring roles before they achieved widespread fame. Notable examples include Idris Elba (Luther, Thor, The Suicide Squad) portraying drug dealer and businessman Stringer Bell, Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Fruitvale Station, Creed) as Wallace, a 16-year-old drug dealer whose character leaves a lasting impact on the series, and Dominic West (The Crown, The Affair) playing the main character, Jimmy McNulty, a gifted but troubled police officer.

The series features Baltimore native Lance Reddick (known for John Wick, White House Down, Lost) as Cedric Daniels, a respected and respectable lieutenant within the police department. Interestingly, Reddick previously starred alongside Welliver in Bosch, portraying Chief Irving. Michael K. Williams (famous for Boardwalk Empire, 12 Years a Slave, Lovecraft Country) brought the character of Omar Little to life, a Robin Hood-like figure who pilfered from neighborhood drug dealers at President Barack Obama’s preference. Wendell Pierce (recognized for Suits, Waiting to Exhale, Selma) plays William Moreland, a police officer. Notably, Paul Ben-Victor (In Plain Sight), Chris Bauer (True Blood), Amy Ryan (The Office), John Doman (Gotham), and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) also made appearances in the series. Despite some initial difficulties in gaining an audience during its original broadcast, several cast members from the show have since established long-lasting careers in the industry.

Although Bosch: Legacy is scheduled to conclude after its third season, fans can take comfort in knowing that the universe will continue through a new series. Recently, Amazon unveiled plans for a spin-off show set within the same world as Bosch, featuring Maggie Q as troubled detective Renee Ballard. This character was first introduced in Michael Connelly’s book The Late Show. Despite not appearing in Bosch: Legacy thus far, Ballard will make an appearance in a crossover episode of the third and final season. The exact release date for this spin-off has yet to be announced, but Titus Welliver, who stars in Bosch, has already filmed one episode for the Renee Ballard series and anticipates shooting at least two more.

Alongside Welliver, the cast of “Bosch: Legacy” includes Mimi Rogers as Honey Chandler and Madison Lintz as Madeline Bosch, who both played these roles in the earlier “Bosch” series. “Bosch: Legacy” is set to return for its final season in March 2025 on Amazon Freevee (formerly known as Amazon Prime). Meanwhile, you can watch “The Wire” right now on Max.
