As a fan who has followed Jon Stewart’s career since his early days on The Daily Show, I can say that his ability to adapt and bounce back from adversity is truly inspiring. His return to the anchor desk after a decade away was a welcome sight for many viewers, and his recent part-time hosting gig only solidifies his status as a comedy legend.
Viewers of The Daily Show have grown accustomed to Jon Stewart hosting the comedy show once a week on the 2024 TV schedule, typically on Mondays but occasionally on different days due to special circumstances. After a decade’s absence, Stewart returned, with guest hosts and correspondents filling in behind the anchor desk during his absence, although this still continues. Interestingly, there was a point when Hasan Minhaj was being considered as the next permanent host of The Daily Show, and Minhaj shared what Stewart said to him when the position didn’t materialize.
Previously serving as a correspondent on The Daily Show from 2014 to 2018, there were rumors in the summer of 2023 that Minhaj was set to replace Trevor Noah as host after Noah’s departure in December 2022. However, due to a controversy surrounding his standup act, this plan fell through. Despite being disheartened by this turn of events, Minhaj, as shared with Esquire, received encouragement from Stewart to create something humorous out of this unfortunate professional situation.

If you haven’t heard already, back in July it was rumored that Comedy Central was considering Hasan Minhaj as Trevor Noah’s successor on The Daily Show. Later, we found out that the deal was almost finalized by late summer. However, an article published in The New Yorker alleged that Minhaj had either exaggerated or fabricated stories for his standup performances. Minhaj called this story “misleading” and released a video in October to address these accusations. By then, Minhaj was seen as a potential risk, and the search for Noah’s replacement broadened once again.
After the recent events, Hasan Minhaj conversed with a select group of comedians, which included Jon Stewart, along with Mike Birbiglia, Ray Youssef, and John Mulaney. This is what Minhaj shared regarding his conversation with Stewart:
Jon Stewart had phoned, and he asked, “What’s the reasoning behind this action, and who stands to gain from it?” or simply, “Jon Stewart inquired about the purpose of such actions and who might profit from them.
Interestingly, Jon Stewart’s plans with Hasan Minhaj not materializing unexpectedly opened up an opportunity for him to revisit his previous domain on The Daily Show, this time in a part-time role. Minhaj humorously referred to himself as the savior of a “dying institution” back in May. Despite things not panning out for him on The Daily Show, he’s certainly maintaining his visibility. Apart from his ongoing comedy engagements, Minhaj has recently acted alongside Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni in It Ends With Us, and is set to appear as a tech CEO in the upcoming Tron: Ares, which will be released on October 10, 2025.
In the meantime, “The Daily Show” is still airing every weekday (Monday-Thursday) at 11 pm Eastern Time on Comedy Central. The episodes can later be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription. Jon Stewart will carry on as part-time host for the rest of this year, but we’ll have to wait and see if they choose a new permanent host in 2025 or if they continue rotating hosts instead.
