After Chicago Med Already Said Goodbye To More Doctors, Here's What We Know About The New Characters In Season 10

As I delve deeper into the world of Chicago Med, I find myself captivated by the arrival of Dr. Lenox, a woman who embodies the spirit of efficiency and determination that only someone with a military background can possess. Her no-nonsense approach and unwavering focus on saving lives, even in the most challenging circumstances, is nothing short of inspiring.

heads up: the first episode of season 10 of Chicago Med airing on NBC titled “Sink or Swim” may contain plot details that have not been disclosed yet.

In contrast to the belief that Chicago Med begins its seasons sluggishly, the Season 10 premiere in the 2024 TV schedule was anything but dull. It presented a massive crisis flooding the ED with critical patients, marked a breakup for Dr. Charles, resolved Ripley’s cliffhanger for Hannah, brought Goodwin back to scrubs, bid farewell to two doctors, and introduced not one, but two new ones. This episode was also the first under the leadership of new showrunner Allen MacDonald, who shared insights about the upcoming roles of the fresh faces following the departure of two characters.

Goodbye To Two Doctors

Unfortunately, the tenth season won’t reach nearly 200 episodes due to the absence of doctors from Season 9 returning. First among them was Dr. Crockett Marcel, whose departure was announced earlier. Although it wasn’t entirely unexpected, Dominic Rains confirmed he wouldn’t be reprising his role for Season 10. In the season premiere, we learned that Dr. Archer had informed us that Crockett’s farewell party occurred the night before and he was likely on a plane to Boston by then, having stayed at the hospital for about a month after the events of the Season 9 finale.

The more striking twist in “Sink or Swim” involved the outcome of Dr. Zach Hudgins, a character who reappeared on Med during Seasons 8 and 9 as an Emergency Department resident. Regrettably, the influx of patients from the capsized ship and another hospital’s closure created not only a logistical burden but also a traumatic situation for Zach. In this high-pressure scenario, he found himself unable to function effectively while working with Goodwin, ultimately choosing to leave.

In an incredible turn of events, I found myself being the one to save a patient’s life when they coded, all without a doctor present. However, our new Emergency Department co-chief, Dr. Caitlin Lenox, maintains a strict policy against ED doctors who panic and leave their patients in dire situations. By the end of the hour, I found myself out of a job, having been let go rather abruptly by her.

And that brings us to not only Lenox, but the other newcomer to Gaffney in the Season 10 premiere!

What To Expect From The Newcomers

In the upcoming Season 10, we’ll meet Dr. Caitlin Lenox and Dr. John Frost, who are set to make significant appearances. During my conversation with showrunner Allen MacDonald before the return of One Chicago on Wednesdays this fall, he expressed his excitement about their introductions.

I can hardly contain my excitement about introducing some fresh faces into the Chicago Med emergency room, particularly Dr. Caitlin Lenox, portrayed by the exceptionally talented Sarah Ramos. When Darren Barnet and Sarah Ramos filmed their initial scenes together, I felt a shiver run down my spine, thinking, “We’ve made the perfect cast for these roles, and they are absolutely sparking with energy – it’s going to be electrifying!

In her role, Lenox swiftly demonstrated her assertive and competent skills as a physician. However, she had a rocky beginning with Archer when he found out they would jointly handle the ED Chief duties on an equal footing. As per the showrunner’s statement, this conflict between the doctors didn’t resolve with the start of Season 10; instead, MacDonald revealed that it continued throughout the premiere.

Speaking from a fan’s perspective, I found myself yearning for Dr. Archer to feel a bit ruffled. Introducing a character with a more grumpy demeanor than him, despite her youth, seemed like the perfect remedy. I wanted to serve him a taste of his own medicine and observe the ensuing drama. Fortunately, we’ve got quite a few scripts in the pipeline, and these two characters are destined for frequent confrontations – just as I had envisioned. Their clashes are nothing short of captivating.

In the Season 10 premiere, efficiency became crucial as the Emergency Department was overrun with traumas, forcing Dr. Charles to dive headfirst into the chaos instead of his typical psychiatric role. Lenox proved vital in saving lives by quickly adapting. It’s understandable that Archer seemed grumpier than normal when introduced to her, given the unexpected news that he would now have to share his position with someone else. Allen MacDonald added:

Her military background is what shapes her, similar to Archer’s, yet interestingly, it seems to irritate them rather than bring them closer. One might expect this shared history to be a bond, but instead, it’s a point of contention for both. Throughout much of the season, Lenox will remain enigmatic, serving as a potent, volatile influence. However, as the story unfolds, we’ll gradually uncover insights into her past and the reasons behind her personality.

Viewers shouldn’t anticipate immediate clarity regarding Lenox; her Army background was sufficient for Dr. Archer, a former Navy vet, to respond in a sassy manner towards her. Meanwhile, the showrunner hinted at additional information about the doctor who visited Gaffney to discuss Maggie and subsequently led to both Dr. Abrams and his young patient being treated. MacDonald previews:

Dr. John Frost is the latest addition to our hospital’s pediatric team, and we’re thrilled about it! Darren, another talented colleague, joins us too, but what sets Dr. Frost apart is his profound affection for children. We’ll delve deeper into why as the story unfolds, but let’s just say that he had a challenging childhood. I’d rather keep some details private at this point, but suffice it to say that he was not treated well by his parents, which led him to sever ties with them and pursue medical school on his own accord. His past, I believe, played an unconscious role in his choice of becoming a pediatrician.

By the finale’s end, Frost hadn’t officially joined the Gaffney team, but considering his impressive display to Maggie and the impending closure of his hospital, it’s clear he’ll be the next recruit. His praise from Dr. Abrams, a tough achievement, adds to this assumption. Moreover, as Med‘s first pediatrician in the ED since Dr. Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard), Frost is well-positioned for this role.

Tune in to NBC every Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time for additional episodes of Chicago Med during its Season 10 run, followed by the premiere of Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET.
