As a long-time comic book enthusiast and moviegoer who has witnessed the evolution of Marvel characters on the big screen, I must say that Hugh Jackman‘s return to Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was a delightful surprise. The yellow and blue suit, a staple of the character since his comics debut, brought a nostalgic charm that connected me back to my childhood dreams of seeing these heroes come alive.
Hugh Jackman’s career skyrocketed when he was chosen to portray Wolverine in the 2000 movie “X-Men.” By 2017, it was revealed that Jackman would cease playing the role after the release of “Logan.” However, the arrival of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the 34th Marvel film, prompted Jackman to reprise his role as Wolverine. Interestingly, he played a version of the character from another world. This new Wolverine had an advantage over his predecessor due to wearing the iconic yellow and blue suit that his comic book counterpart has sported for many years. Remarkably, putting on this costume for the first time made Jackman feel more connected to his most well-known role.
Following Deadpool & Wolverine’s run in theaters on the 2024 release schedule, Marvel Studios is gearing up to release the movie on home media. As part of this marketing push, Hugh Jackman shared a clip from one of the Deadpool 3 special features on his social media pages, including Instagram. The clip starts off with Ryan Reynolds talking about how Hugh Jackman sent him and the other writers a “10-minute voice memo” pitching how this Wolverine should be the “worst Wolverine.” More importantly, on the subject of Wolverine’s costume, Jackman started off by saying this:
When I stepped into the space adorned with both yellow and blue hues, I recognized instantly that it was going to be successful. It was an extraordinary sensation. For the first time in my 24 years, I felt a profound sense of being rooted, deeper than ever before.
Previously, Wolverine’s iconic yellow suit was only shown in live-action during a deleted scene from “The Wolverine”. However, throughout Hugh Jackman’s tenure as Wolverine in the main X-Men film series under 20th Century Fox, his character primarily appeared in civilian clothes or black leather outfits. But when Jackman donned the classic yellow and blue costume, he felt truer to the original creation of Len Wein and John Romita Sr. than ever before. The actor added:
I couldn’t believe we hadn’t given it a shot before or even considered it, but as soon as I saw it, especially with the cowl on, it felt like Hugh Jackman, my dear character, had vanished completely. All that was left was Wolverine.
It’s a good thing Hugh Jackman got to put on the costume for Deadpool & Wolverine, because although Wade Wilson joked in the movie about how Disney will make Jackman play Wolverine until he’s 90, it remains to be seen if we’ll see this version of the character, or any of the Jackman-portrayed Wolverine variants, pop back up in the Marvel multiverse. Whether this is truly the last time we see him in the MCU or he resurfaces in an upcoming Marvel movie like Avengers: Secret Wars, at least the actor stuck with Logan long enough to finally wear a comics-accurate suit. It would have been great if other actors from the original X-Men movies had been given that opportunity, too.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be available for digital download starting October 1, and the Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD versions will follow on October 22. Additionally, it’s anticipated that the movie may become streamable with a Disney+ subscription towards the end of this year or early in 2025.
