Longlegs Star Maika Monroe to Lead The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Remake

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for the chilling and macabre, I must say that Maika Monroe’s career trajectory is nothing short of captivating. After her mesmerizing performance in Longlegs, she has now taken on the role of an evil nanny in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle – a role originally played by Rebecca De Mornay in the 1992 classic. This reimagining is set to be produced by none other than 20th Century Studios, who have proven their prowess with this year’s critically-acclaimed The First Omen.

Following her outstanding performance in the blockbuster hit Longlegs, Makia Monroe is now aiming for her next venture into horror, which might be familiar to some traditional fans of the genre. She will assume the role of an antagonistic nanny in a modern adaptation of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, a chilling horror-thriller initially released more than two decades ago. This upcoming project is a reboot of the original 1992 film, with production handled by 20th Century Studios, who recently released the critically-appraised The First Omen, a fresh take on an iconic horror series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maika Monroe has landed her first role post-“Longlegs” in the 20th Century Studios-produced remake of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” directed by Michelle Garza Cervera (known for “Huesera: The Bone Woman”). In the original movie, Rebecca De Mornay played Mrs. Mott, a widow who plotted revenge on Claire Bartel (Annabella Sciorra) by assuming the role of a nanny to infiltrate her life and family before ultimately killing her. Monroe will portray the vengeful nanny, who is both the antagonist and a central character in the film. It remains unclear if the mother’s role has been cast or if the remake will significantly alter the source material. Regardless, Monroe is stepping into a significant role in a film by one of the leading studios today, marking a departure from her usual lower-budget productions.

In Oz Perkins’ thrilling film “Longlegs,” I found myself captivated by the enigmatic FBI agent Lee Harker, played masterfully by Maika Monroe. This gifted yet quirky character has a past shrouded in mystery, intricately linked to the very heart of the story’s perplexing conundrum. Harker is on a mission to track down Longlegs (portrayed chillingy by Nicolas Cage), a serial killer who’s been terrorizing families for decades and leaves cryptic zodiac-like messages that only Harker has managed to decipher. This fresh take on “The Silence of the Lambs” carves its own niche in the horror genre, not just because of Monroe’s outstanding performance and stunning cinematography, but also due to Cage’s intensely disturbing portrayal of Longlegs – a character far from the typical villain seen in most horror movies.

Prior to her breakthrough role in “It Follows”, Monroe had already established herself in the horror genre with several critically-acclaimed films. Now, she’s back with “Watcher” from director Chloe Okuno in 2022. Despite a brief foray into major blockbusters with “Independence Day: Resurgence” in 2016, Monroe is rapidly gaining recognition as a horror movie star. Her upcoming project promises to further cement her status in the genre.
