The Winchesters’ Meg Donnelly Talks Losing Out On Playing Supergirl To Milly Alcock, And I Hope The DC Universe Finds Another Role For Her

As a gamer with a soft spot for superheroes and a knack for remembering trivia, I can’t help but feel a twinge of empathy for Meg Donnelly. Having watched her bring Supergirl to life in the animated realm and seen her brief stint on TV, it’s clear that she has the chops to tackle live-action superhero roles.

Meg Donnelly gained recognition from her brief stint as Mary Campbell on the spinoff series “The Winchesters” and her leading roles in the Disney Channel’s “Zombies” series. However, she also has some experience in the superhero genre. She lent her voice to Kara Zor-El, or Supergirl, in the animated direct-to-video movies of the Tomorrowverse timeline. Despite trying out for the same character in the DC Universe, Milly Alcock was cast instead in “House of the Dragon.” After learning about Donnelly’s near casting in the upcoming DC film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” (2026), I truly hope that this franchise offers her another opportunity in the future.

During an interview on “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum,” Donnelly spoke about her near brush with becoming a part of the DC Universe. Rosenbaum, who is connected to the Superman lore through his role as Lex Luthor in Smallville, served as the host for this discussion. When the topic of Donnelly’s audition for Supergirl came up, which led to her meeting James Gunn, a key figure at DC Studios and the creator behind the upcoming Superman film, she was asked if not getting the role was painful. In response, the actress shared her feelings on the matter.

Without a doubt, I can’t deny it was a devastating experience, but on the other hand, the mere fact that I got an audition and they appreciated my work… I submitted the video, then tested. The astonishing part is that they liked it and even gave me a chance – it seemed unbelievable.

As a fellow fan, it’s heartening to know that Meg Donnelly will always hold a special place in Supergirl’s media history. However, I can empathize with her feelings of disappointment over not getting the chance to portray Supergirl on the silver screen. Just like Milly Alcock, she only has one live-action movie credit under her belt, the 2017 indie film “The Broken Ones.” Landing the role of Supergirl in the DC Universe, set to debut later this year with the animated series “Creature Commandos” (available with a Max subscription), would have undeniably boosted her profile among moviegoers… at least for those who hadn’t previously seen her on TV shows like Supergirl, American Housewife, or other projects.

Though my journey with Supergirl didn’t materialize as expected, I found myself aligning with Michael Rosenbaum’s perspective. That audition, despite not leading to the role, can be viewed as a significant “accomplishment” in my book. It could very well pave the way for new opportunities, and that’s something truly exciting to look forward to.

That’s exactly my perspective on the situation. Growing up, I was captivated by superhero films in general, and being given the opportunity to audition for one of these movies and step into that universe even briefly has been a dream come true. The people involved with James Gunn’s team are genuinely wonderful individuals. Despite my jitters – I was so nervous I could barely contain myself (laughs) – they made me feel completely at ease. That experience will forever stay with me, and it’s a testament to the fact that there are truly kind and talented people in this industry who support each other. It was a valuable lesson for me too.

Considering the array of DC Universe films and upcoming TV series such as Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold, it seems likely that James Gunn, Peter Safran, and other decision-makers at DC Studios could discover new roles for Meg Donnelly. It’s hard to imagine they would overlook her potential after she was nearly cast as Supergirl. Donnelly also holds the people she worked with during her audition in high regard, so I hope that opportunities in the DC Universe will present themselves for her again in the future.

At present, the franchise commences with the debut of Creature Commandos on Max on December 5, and Superman appears on July 11, 2025. Subsequently, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. It’s reported that Matthias Schoenaerts takes on the role of the principal antagonist.
