Netflix's Happy Gilmore 2 Will De-Age Original Characters For Flashbacks

As a long-time admirer of Adam Sandler and his comedic genius, I must say that the upcoming sequel to “Happy Gilmore” has me absolutely thrilled! With over three decades separating the original film from its sequel, it’s fascinating to see how technology has evolved to allow for actors like Julie Bowen to be de-aged in order to portray their characters more authentically.

The beloved 1990s movie “Happy Gilmore” is set for a sequel on Netflix, and several of its original stars are coming back. A popular trend in modern films and television is “de-aging,” which involves using special effects to make characters appear younger. This technique can be contentious, particularly when it’s used to resurrect deceased actors. Actress Julie Bowen, returning as Virginia Venit from the first film, mentioned during an interview with Collider that there will be a scene in “Happy Gilmore 2” where this effect is used to make the cast appear younger.

“It’s quite unusual, but due to flashbacks, they need me to wear old hairstyles and clothes from back then, which aren’t my favorite. However, it’s exciting because they’re also de-aging me, something I’ve never experienced before. I can hardly wait to see the results. There are lots of fun elements to look forward to. Additionally, working with Adam [Sandler] and Chris [McDonald], as well as some of the original crew, is a pleasure. Adam is a fantastic, kind person to work with who appreciates his team from the start. Perry [Andelin Blake], our production designer, has been with him since Happy Gilmore, and he hasn’t changed a bit.

Given approximately three decades since the initial movie and its sequel, it’s understandable that some actors might need digital aging reversal if the narrative requires scenes set in the past. Since these moments may not involve lengthy sequences like the recent Indiana Jones films, there’s no immediate cause for concern.

In contrast to traditional sequels like Happy Gilmore 2 that heavily rely on nostalgia, it appears that this upcoming movie isn’t solely dependent on it for its existence. The film has already announced fresh talents such as Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny, although their specific roles in the storyline remain a mystery. It is rumored that Kelce will only have a brief appearance, so viewers may not see him extensively. Additionally, Margaret Qualley has confirmed her involvement in the project.

I was truly saddened to hear about the passing of Carl Weathers. Although it was already a long shot given his character met an end in the original movie, I had been hoping to see him reprise his role in the sequel. Regrettably, that won’t be happening. However, since he played such an iconic role as Happy Gilmore’s mentor, I’m almost certain there will be some heartfelt nod or tribute to his character in the new film.

At present, only Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, and Bowen are set to rejoin the cast for the upcoming film. As of now, no plot specifics have been disclosed, and a release date for the movie has yet to be announced. Filming commenced on September 9, suggesting that there’s still a significant amount of work before it becomes available to the public. Given that fans have been waiting decades already, another year or two seems insignificant at this point.
