Hajime Sorayama Unveils Sleek Public Art Sculpture in Shanghai

As a seasoned gamer and enthusiast of art with a penchant for the fusion of technology and human aesthetics, I find myself utterly captivated by Hajime Sorayama‘s latest masterpiece, “Space Traveler.” Having spent countless hours immersed in virtual realms populated by AI entities, this sculpture resonates deeply with my experiences.

Renowned Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama is teaming up with NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE to reveal a fresh outdoor sculpture, titled “Space Traveler“, at The Summit, an emerging complex in Shanghai’s Pudong New District. This project, jointly developed with Poly Group, showcases Sorayama’s iconic fembot in a 13-foot stainless steel form, floating suspended above the ground within a concave wall that reflects its surrounding environment.

A Space Traveler ponders over a time when technology surpasses human capabilities. The polished “Sexy Robot” designed by Sorayama mirrors the characteristics of its creators, yet remains devoid of life, merely embodying the impulses and sensitivities that shape the evolution of human emotions. Beneath the alluring exterior of Sorayama’s art lies an investigation into the commercialization of the physical form and the growing fusion of humans and machinery.

In a different perspective, Space Traveler’s journey could be seen as sparking queries about if our technology might someday surpass the boundaries of the human body, leading to an everlasting existence. It also raises questions about the possibility of a future where artificial intelligence and humans peacefully coexist.

The public art sculpture will be on view in Shanghai until November 6, 2024.
