The Week's Wrapp - Cards, Conquering and Cultivation

As a Reviews Editor with a soft spot for emotional games, I’m thrilled to be diving into Pine: A Story of Loss this weekend. Having just returned from Barcelona’s Indie Dev Day, where I met the developers of Pineapple: A Bittersweet Revenge, I can’t help but feel that this game will tug at my heartstrings in a similar way. The anticipation is real, and I’m bracing myself for a rollercoaster of feels!

This weekend, I’ll find myself constantly switching among various games, just like any other weekend! Coming up in Honkai: Star Rail next week is Lingsha, who I really want for my Super Break team, so I plan on grinding passes there. In between gaming sessions, I’ve been feeling the urge to revisit Rocket League Sideswipe – it’s been a while, but it sure is enjoyable!

On Saturdays, my Final Fantasy XIV guild holds its raids, and unexpectedly, I found myself in the Raid Leader position. It’s turned out to be more enjoyable than I anticipated, and surprisingly less stressful. Additionally, I’ve been drawn back into the allure of space with the return of Starfield. The updates have been numerous, including the introduction of a new buggy that’s truly remarkable.

This week, I’m planning to explore Athena Crisis, a strategy game from Null Games that combines elements of XCOM and Advance Wars. Currently, my gaming preferences are leaning towards mobile strategy games, and the charming pixel art of Athena Crisis has caught my eye. If you’re intrigued but not completely convinced, you can try out a demo version on the game’s official website. A big thanks to Shaun for bringing it to my attention!

Apart from mobile devices, and without being fashionably tardy, I recently embarked on Red Dead Redemption 2. So far, my impressions are divided. The acting, narrative, and meticulous design are captivating, but the gameplay, while authentic in intent, feels somewhat average. I admire their pursuit of a more realistic experience, but controlling Arthur Morgan is reminiscent of steering a boat, which frankly isn’t particularly enjoyable.

It’s Balatro for me.

As a gamer, I’ve been having a blast mixing up planet and tarot cards, burning them, and goofing off with good ol’ Jimbo! I’ve been granted early access to this exciting new game a few days before its official launch, and I’m already making fantastic progress in building my collection and unlocking rewards.

Balatro shines particularly well on mobile devices. In fact, it seems to reach its peak efficiency here. The touchscreen interface works effortlessly for card-based games, making them feel incredibly intuitive. Just like how classic games such as Spider Solitaire and Hearts became staples on Windows, card games have remained popular on mobile platforms since their initial launch.

I’m thrilled that these terrific indie roguelikes and run-based games are now available on mobile devices! With Balatro’s excellent adaptation, I have high expectations that even more of these games will transition to smaller screens and thrive in this platform.

Over the weekend, it might seem like I’ll just be playing Pokemon Go. But let me set the record straight! While I will indeed indulge in some Pokemon Go action this weekend, my gaming schedule won’t be limited to that alone.

After wrapping up my flight journey, I’m all set to dive into the enchanting world of Fairy Village. This adorable game lets me construct my very own fairy cottage and deck it out with charming decorations. It’s developed by HyperBeard, who consistently create games that not only dazzle visually but also offer a delightful gaming experience.

This weekend, I’ll be enjoying a relaxed playthrough of an early version of the game “Pine: A Story of Loss,” which is under an embargo. The controls are said to be tranquil, but I can’t help but feel tense about how emotionally impactful it might be. I’ve voluntarily abstained from intense gaming, so this seems like a perfect fit.

In Episode 2 of our Pocket Gamer podcast, we discussed some games that evoke strong emotions. Why not give it a listen this weekend, whether you’re waiting for a train or taking a break from your favorite time-killer game on your smartphone?

After putting aside my phase of collecting frivolous weaponry, I’ve chosen a more serious path instead. Fortunately, thanks to Dann, I had the opportunity to sneak peek at Age Of Empires Mobile, an upcoming release that holds a special significance for me because Age Of Empires 2 was actually the very first real-time strategy game I ever played. It ignited my passion for strategic gaming and kindled my curiosity about history, with Joan of Arc being one of its most esteemed historical figures. Care to challenge me on this?

You need to gather resources, construct buildings, train soldiers, explore territories, venture into uncharted waters, and hope to draw legendary historical (and fictional) characters from the tavern.

This transformation will greatly enhance its accessibility as a digital and community-focused game, boasting decent visuals. However, the longevity of this mobile realm remains to be seen.

After spending quite some time away on journeys to see my loved ones, I find myself yearning for a familiar gaming experience: Stardew Valley. Although it isn’t a fresh release, I always return to it whenever I desire tranquility, and that’s the very essence of how I wish to spend this weekend.

As a gamer, I find myself deeply engrossed in decorating my farm and mining the Skull Caverns for hours on end. However, with limited time at hand, I’ve been neglecting the Ginger Island quests. So, I plan to balance things out by diving into those as well. First up is the Pirate Wife’s quest, followed by exploring all the dungeons here that I can. If time permits, I’ll give it a shot, but I’ve heard they can get quite risky!
