The Rocky Horror Picture Show Time Warps onto Hulu, Streaming from October

As a movie critic who grew up in the era of VHS tapes and late-night television, I can confidently say that the return of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” to streaming is like finding an old friend you’ve missed dearly. This cult classic has been a staple in my personal film library since I first stumbled upon it during one of those aforementioned late-night viewings.

Hurrah! Here’s another way to say it: Oh joy, Janet, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will be available for streaming soon on Hulu, perfect timing for the chilling autumn season! This beloved cultural phenomenon is one of the most iconic musical films ever made, stemming from a wildly successful stage production that’s been captivating audiences worldwide. With lines you’ll find yourself quoting for years to come and tunes that will have you humming the “Time Warp” for weeks on end, this film is making its comeback on streaming platforms for endless re-watching pleasure.

Beginning October 1st, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will be added to Hulu’s collection of October movies. Originally released in 1975, this groundbreaking musical has left an indelible mark on pop culture and introduced many to the unforgettable character of Frank-N-Furter, played by Tim Curry. In a desperate attempt to phone for help after their car stalls in a secluded forest, Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) seek assistance at a nearby mansion. Upon entering, they discover they are not just borrowing a phone but are in the hands of some extraordinary, alien-like residents.

In my opinion, this movie initially seems like it could be just another typical horror flick, but boy, was I wrong! It transforms into an outrageously funny, weird, and unforeseen sci-fi musical that’s off the charts amazing – think Starlight Express on steroids. Curry, Richard O’Brien, Patricia Quinn, and Nell Campbell play the eccentric characters assisting Frank-N-Furter: Riff Raff, Magenta, and Columbia, respectively. The real gem of the movie is none other than Rocky, Frank-N-Furter’s creation, portrayed by Peter Hinwood. And just when you think it can’t get any better, Meat Loaf makes an appearance, knocking our socks off with a fantastic musical number!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Is the Definitive Cult Movie

The phrase “cult-classic” is used excessively these days, applied to films ranging from “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” to “Dora and the Lost City of Gold“. Various media outlets have labeled these movies as “cult”, but the term’s interpretation is as contentious as that of Indie music. However, there’s no disagreement that “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” holds the title as the epitome of a cult film.

Although “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” doesn’t initially fit the standard definition of a “cult” film (a movie that bombed at the box office but thrived afterwards), it has amassed such an extraordinary fanbase that they could be considered a cult in essence. The stage production, which has been on and off since 1973, boasts one of the most loyal fan communities in the entertainment industry. Akin to today’s Swifties (we offer our apologies to the creators of “Rocky Horror” for this analogy), followers will travel globally to catch the production, and the live experience is steeped in its own unique customs.

Unlike many Broadway and West End productions that frown upon audience interaction, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” actively encourages it. Audience members enthusiastically hurl jokes and taunts at the characters, particularly Janet, during the show, and the characters respond by improvising dialogue based on these comments. This interactive experience is also a key aspect of the movie’s screenings, with fans often traveling great distances for special sing-along events.
