In a conversation with the cast, all of whom are also executive producers, ahead of the premiere, they discussed the benefits of creating mystery for viewers by deviating from the original campaign. Matt Mercer, the Critical Role Dungeon Master and voice of several Legend of Vox Machina characters, expressed:

Reflecting our commitment to preserving the essence of the initial project while introducing new elements, we aim to convey the authentic vibe of the original series, yet provide opportunities to unveil untold parts of the story that were previously unexplored from the players’ point of view in the original campaign. This unexpected revelation will undoubtedly delight everyone in numerous exciting ways.

In the first two seasons, we’ve seen instances where the story unfolds without the initial group of characters being present, and it seems likely that this trend will persist in Season 3. Mercer added:

Looking back, we could tweak some aspects subtly to enhance the storyline in unexpected ways, delighting those who followed the campaign initially. These alterations would be made with agreement and enthusiasm, primarily focusing on improving the narrative rather than shock value. The result is likely to leave a few viewers quite astonished by the twists and turns. [laughs]

Travis Willingham, known for voicing Grog and collaborating with Sam Riegel on multiple episodes, expressed his unique perspective on the challenge of deviating from the original tale in the Prime Video adaptation. During a conversation with several cast members/producers, he spoke to TopMob about this aspect.

From my perspective as a dedicated fan, it’s our mission to challenge the predictions of our viewers by subverting their expectations and reshaping the narrative in unexpected ways. While we may give hints about future events, we aim to prolong the suspense, keeping them guessing from one episode to the next. If we can successfully create this sense of mystery and anticipation, I believe we’ve truly mastered the art of storytelling in this particular journey.

Regarding the query if they purposely generate tension for viewers who are already familiar with the storyline, Ashley Johnson, known for voicing Pike and previously Ellie in the video games of The Last of Us, instantly agreed, saying “Yes, definitely.” Marisha Ray, voice actor for Keyleth, also weighed in on her thoughts.

There’s a story, even if you know where it is going, [that] you can still have that element of surprise. I think that’s why we as humans love stories and can watch movies or we can watch series several times over and still get that emotional response. That’s on full display, especially here in Season 3.

From the trailer and opening sequence, it appears that the storyline involving Keyleth surviving while the rest of Vox Machina might be significant in Season 3. Furthermore, it seems that the relationship between Keyleth and Vax, as portrayed by Liam O’Brien, is back on track after facing challenges in Season 2. Liam O’Brien, voice actor for Vax’ildan, offered insights into the transition from tabletop game to screen.

I view it as simply a continuation of our usual dinner-time antics when the eight of us gather. We enjoy startling one another, creating unexpected moments during meals, and now we’re extending that fun to a larger audience. Essentially, it’s all about sharing stories.
