As a lifelong cinephile who’s seen more Marvel movies than I can count on my fingers, I must say that I’m genuinely excited about Joseph Quinn joining the MCU as Johnny Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Having grown up watching the original films and loving their dynamic, it’s a dream come true to see this iconic superhero team return with such an impressive cast.

2021’s San Diego Comic-Con unveiled Marvel’s strategy to reintroduce the beloved superheroes from The Fantastic Four on the silver screen, with a hope for better outcomes compared to 20th Century Fox’s earlier attempts. Although the film titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps isn’t due until 2025, actor Joseph Quinn from Stranger Things, who’s taking on the role of Johnny Storm, recently shared some exciting news and a humorous commentary about his preparations for the character in an interview.

MCU enthusiasts are excited for the upcoming version of The Fantastic Four, as past efforts portraying the superhero squad didn’t turn out well. So far, details about the movie are limited, but we do know that Pedro Pascal will play Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby is cast as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch. During an interview with L’Officiel USA two days ago, when asked how he got ready for portraying a character with pyrokinetic abilities, Quinn offered this humorous response:

1) You’ve asked an excellent question. Quite frequently, I find myself engulfed in flames on my balcony. I simply fill a large container with gasoline and soak myself in it. [This statement is paraphrased to convey the original intent but with a less dangerous and more metaphorical tone.]

Even though his approach was meant to be more lighthearted, Quinn expressed some genuine passion for the role. He further stated, “Of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe gangs, it was my favorite one.” He continued, “I recall watching those movies when I was younger and truly enjoying them. Although some fans might find Marvel’s version of The Fantastic Four less than satisfactory, Quinn nevertheless has a packed schedule ahead. Not only is there a possibility that members of The Fantastic Four will appear in two more upcoming films from Marvel, but Quinn also landed a role in Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland’s as-yet-unnamed A24 war movie, which is yet to receive a title.
