As a cinephile who has been following The Simpsons since its inception, I must say that the Season 36 premiere left me utterly bewildered and amused at the same time. The idea of the long-running animated sitcom coming to an end felt like a punchline straight out of Springfield’s quirky humor.
When Season 36 of “The Simpsons” premiered, it left many fans puzzled because the first episode appeared to conclude the long-running animated comedy series with a final episode. This special episode was hosted by a character resembling Conan O’Brien, a former writer and well-known comedian for the show. In an unexpected move, O’Brien announced that Fox had decided to end “The Simpsons”, bringing back various famous guests to mark this significant occasion.
It’s a tremendous privilege for me to join you all as we bid farewell to ‘The Simpsons’ in its series finale. Having hosted the final episodes of three shows prior, I felt confident that I was the right choice for this role. However, Fox has chosen to conclude the Simpsons, and this show holds a significant place in my early career. Being here to be a part of this historic moment means everything to me. Additionally, I left a sweater in the writers’ room back in 1993; they agreed to return it only on this condition!
In “Bart’s Birthday,” an artificial intelligence devises what it believes is the perfect conclusion for The Simpsons. Interestingly, Bart, who has been 10 years old for the past 35 years in the series, suddenly becomes sentient as he turns 11. Now aware of his surroundings, Bart attempts to prevent Springfield and its residents from altering their way of life.
In this latest installment, I found myself witnessing the concluding chapters of various characters’ journeys. Homer and Marge sought tranquility through couples therapy, opting for a more serene lifestyle. Lisa, with her exceptional talents, secured a scholarship to Junior Juliard Jazz. Maggie made her debut into verbal communication, adding a touch of Marvel Cinematic Universe humor to the occasion. Mr. Burns met an untimely end in a vat of acid, while John Cena played midwife to Comic Book Guy and Kumiko, delivering their baby. Chief Wiggum bid adieu to Springfield and embarked on a journey to Chicago. Krusty the Clown hung up his shoes, ending his show, and Principal Skinner departed for Sacramento, moving in with Groundskeeper Willie for a fresh spin-off series. The “real” Seymour Skinner made a comeback, and we were treated to a plethora of marriages and farewells.
This installment showcased an array of special appearances, such as John Cena, Tom Hanks, Joel McHale, Mark Proksch portraying Hack-GPT, Seth Rogen, Amy Sedaris in the role of Maggie Simpson, and Danny DeVito, reprising his character as Homer’s sibling, Herbert Powell.
The Simpsons Season 36 Opener Pays Tribute To Several Major Finales
In the end, Bart manages to outsmart the AI’s final scheme, restoring everything to its proper state and allowing him to celebrate his tenth birthday once more. The episode concludes by giving a nod to various iconic finales such as those of The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, M*A*S*H, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Frasier, Succession, and many others.
The episode caused quite a stir among fans, with Codenamegamma expressing their bewilderment on X/Twitter, “Hang on, could this not really be the Simpsons Series Finale? What in the world!”, while ChocMilkDrinker questioned, “Is this truly the Simpsons Series Finale???
As a passionate fan of The Simpsons, I’d wholeheartedly recommend giving the latest episode another look. Even if you’ve strayed from the series, @Codenamegamma suggests it’s worth revisiting, stating, “Alright, so it wasn’t the finale as promised. But Bart became self-aware and broke the AI script instead. It was a brilliant episode! If you stopped watching because you thought the show wasn’t good anymore, I encourage you to check this one out.” @CartoonGal1 echoes my sentiment, saying, “I genuinely believed this was the series finale until I realized it was just a clever joke. However, this was an outstanding and hilarious Season 36 premiere! The references were fantastic!
