Mubi Takes ‘Pavements’ Doc for SVOD, Multiple International Territories

As a dedicated fan of indie cinema and alternative rock music, I am absolutely thrilled about the acquisition of Alex Ross Perry’s ‘Pavements’ by Mubi! Being a child of the ’90s myself, I can vividly remember the influence that Pavement had on the music scene during that era. To see such an iconic band get the cinematic treatment they deserve is nothing short of exhilarating.

Art-focused streaming service, Mubi, has obtained the screening rights for Alex Ross Perry’s film “Pavements,” which had its first public showing in the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival.

Mubi obtained the rights to distribute the portrait of the significant ’90s indie band across the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, France, and Canada. Additionally, it secured exclusive streaming rights for this film in the United States, where Utopia will release it in cinemas.

As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but marvel at Perry, renowned for masterpieces like “Her Smell” and “Listen Up Philip.” Beyond his cinematic prowess, he’s also a music video maestro who directed Pavement’s video for “Harness Your Hopes” in 2022. For Pavement, Perry employs an array of formats and genres – from docudramas to musical satire to art installations – to showcase the alt-rock band whose fame has been on a steady rise since their ’90s peak.

In his two-hour-plus review for THR, critic Jordan Mintzer praised the film as both “comprehensive and energetic.” He added that while being a dedicated fan of Pavement or director Alex Ross Perry isn’t necessary to enjoy the movie, it definitely enhances the experience.

Mubi, a platform that distributes films in various global regions, has ventured into the domestic market by screening “The Substance,” a body horror drama directed by Coralie Fargeat, starring Demi Moore. This film has earned approximately $7 million so far. Other recent acquisitions include “Bird” directed by Andrea Arnold and “The Girl With the Needle” by Magnus von Horn, both films having been showcased at Cannes.
