Renowned Australian filmmaker Warwick Thornton has agreed to helm “First Warrior,” an extensive movie depicting the tale of Australian Aboriginal resistance fighter Pemulwuy. Notable Aussie actors Sam Worthington, known for his roles in “Avatar” and “Hacksaw Ridge,” and Jason Clarke, recognized for his work in “Oppenheimer” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” have joined the production to play key characters. The search is reportedly on for the principal role of Pemulwuy as they look for a suitable actor to bring this historic figure to life.
A Bidjigal native from the Sydney area, Pemulwuy spearheaded a 12-year struggle against incoming British settlers invading their ancestral territories during the colonization of Australia in the late 1700s.
Among Australia’s highly respected directors, Thornton gained recognition in 2009 when his first directorial effort, “Samson & Delilah“, received the Camera d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival. His 2017 production, “Sweet Country“, was honored with Venice’s Special Jury Prize, and his latest creation, “The New Boy” featuring Cate Blanchett, debuted at Cannes the previous year.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to be part of the team behind “First Warrior,” a project that carries the blessings of the Bidjigal, Dharawal, and Dharug Elders. The creative core of this game is entirely Indigenous, spearheaded by talented individuals like Jon Bell, writer of “The Moogai” and “Cleverman,” and Andrew Dillon, a writer-producer known for “Le Champion” and “Outliers.
The project boasts an exceptional Australian screenwriting squad, comprising BAFTA-nominated writer Stuart Beattie (Collateral, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl), Philip Noyce (Rabbit-Proof Fence, Salt) and Shana Levine (The Portable Door, Charlie & Boots).
“Thornton expressed his deep gratitude for being involved in such an outstanding film. He believes it’s a significant tale with a fantastic screenplay and iconic performers,” said Thornton in a statement.
