As a seasoned gamer of the Chicago PD universe, I must say that the Season 12 premiere was a rollercoaster ride without Upton and Burgess, leaving Ruzek in a state of shock with an old friend as his partner – reminiscent of those times when my favorite character gets replaced by a new one in a game I’ve been playing for hours!
In the 2024 TV lineup, Chicago P.D. kicked off Season 12 with an episode that offered much more than just a glimpse of the Intelligence Unit without Upton. Additionally, Burgess was missing from this episode, and for most of it, Ruzek worked alongside an old academy acquaintance as his partner. However, things took a dramatic turn in the surprising finale, where she was brutally killed right before his eyes. Given these circumstances, it’s likely that Ruzek will face some tough times ahead. Meanwhile, Marina Squerciati’s latest behind-the-scenes photos should bring a smile to fans’ faces.
I wasn’t skipping the Season 12 premiere, which you can catch on Peacock, for any shady business. In the storyline, I was off attending the NAWLEE conference, where I was soaking up knowledge but also considering returning early because my caseload has me quite troubled, as Ruzek put it. (Behind-the-scenes, it’s probably budget-related.)
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but wonder when our beloved Burgess might rejoin us in the exciting Burzek projects hinted by showrunner Gwen Sigan. Fortunately, it seems she’s quite active on Instagram, keeping us all updated!

Marina Squerciati enlisted Benjamin Levy Aguilar to assist her in replicating a photograph she had previously taken with Jesse Lee Soffer, when he was still a regular on the series. The post’s caption took a playful turn, as Marina essentially spun a tale about Jake and Kate – or Jay Halstead and Kim Burgess – using hashtags. The comment section served to clarify the backstory of “Jake and Kate” for fans who may not have been aware of its origins.
It seems that Soffer and Squerciati’s characters Jay and Kim seldom appeared together on set, so they started referring to each other by their character names Jake and Kate. Since Aguilar was included in the photo, could it be that Burgess and Torres will also have minimal screen time together as Antonio and Maria? After all, she did call him “Benji” in her post!
In all sincerity, it’s refreshing to witness a bit of laughter from the Chicago P.D. crew following the gruesome conclusion of Season 12, which left Ruzek in a state of shock. It’s doubtful that the cast would be celebrating like Tracy Spiridakos did, given their characters had no reason to rejoice.
At this stage, it’s not entirely clear how far into filming the current season the cast is, given they’re both wearing coats. However, Showrunner Gwen Sigan mentioned in mid-September that the writers were already working on Episodes 7 and 8, which suggests we might be further along than it seems.
