Having been fortunate enough to traverse through the digital landscapes of Baker’s previous works, such as “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project,” I can’t help but feel a sense of familiarity and excitement at the prospect of delving into another one of his captivating narratives.
2017’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner by Sean Baker, titled “Anora“, is set to kick off the 2022 Stockholm Film Festival, as announced on Tuesday by festival organizers.
Actress Mikey Madison, known for her roles in “Scream” and “Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood,” takes on the leading part in a zany comedy-drama. In this film, she portrays a sex worker residing in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, who unexpectedly becomes entangled with the son of a Russian billionaire.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been fortunate to witness the extraordinary journey of “Anora” firsthand. This captivating masterpiece made its debut in competition at the esteemed Cannes Film Festival, where it clinched the top honor for Best Film. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of following its footsteps on the festival circuit. I’ve been graced with the opportunity to view “Anora” at Telluride, Toronto, and the San Sebastián film festivals. Each screening has only solidified my admiration for this remarkable work of art.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s festival review, Madison’s portrayal of Anora was highly commended. She imbued the character with a touching sweetness that made even the most business-like scenarios seem relatable, and a vulnerability that made her character menacing when under attack.
Anora’s upcoming destination is Sweden, where her film will commence the 2024 Stockholm Film Festival on November 6th. This marks the 34th year of the festival, which spans from November 6th to the 17th.
Baker is a regular at Stockholm, having screened his 2015 breakthrough Tangerine and 2017 feature The Florida Project at the festival. In a statement, the Stockholm festival noted how the connection between those features and Anora. They all “examine marginalized groups in general and the everyday life of sex workers in particular. With his eighth feature film, the indie humanist and filmmaker Sean Baker proves that he is one of the most skilled contemporary portrayers of the modern working class in the United States.”
Neon has Anora for the U.S. and is planning an October 18 release.
