Upon its release on September 25, following an impressive run in theaters where it reigned as the top domestic film for three weeks, it earned $652 million domestically and a staggering $1.69 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2024. The highly anticipated arrival of Inside Out 2 on Disney+ was expected to be significant, but the Pixar sequel has consistently surpassed expectations.
Based on Deadline’s report, “Inside Out 2” racked up an impressive 30.5 million views globally within its first five days on Disney+. This movie premiere on Disney+ in 2024 stands as the largest to date, surpassing even the debut of “Encanto,” which was released on Christmas Eve 2021. Furthermore, it holds the record for the biggest premiere on Disney+ not just in the U.S., but also across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Interestingly, “Inside Out 2” is currently the highest-grossing film in Mexico, Columbia, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay. Additionally, the release of the sequel has sparked renewed interest in the original “Inside Out,” with over 121 million views recorded since the teaser trailer for the follow-up debuted on November 9, 2023.
Disney+ is Booming, But Employees Are Not
The sequel to “Inside Out” has boosted Disney+’s viewership, pushing “Agatha All Along” off the top spot previously held by the popular series “Bluey”. Excited fans of both “Inside Out” movies can look forward to “Dream Productions”, a series bridging the gap between the films, set to release all four episodes on December 11, 2024. It remains to be seen if the upcoming MCU film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine will surpass the Disney+ streaming record established by “Inside Out 2”, as it outperformed the sequel’s box office earnings during its opening weekend in 2024.
While Inside Out 2’s impressive box office earnings and successful streaming debut undoubtedly bring joy to Disney shareholders, it’s unfortunate that these financial gains may not reach many Disney employees. In May, Pixar let go of 175 workers, a move made just one month before the release of Inside Out 2 in theaters. Many of these dismissed employees had put in extra hours to ensure the timely delivery of the film, only to miss out on the bonuses they would have received following its record-breaking box office performance. On the very same day that Inside Out 2 debuted on Disney+, it was announced that at least 300 more employees across the company were being let go as a cost-cutting measure. As a result, many of the profits generated by Inside Out 2 and other successful releases like Deadpool & Wolverine may not reach the hands of Disney’s hardworking staff.
